Cool The ice is out!

It's been a brutal winter here in Wisconsin, well ... it still is! But after ~30 days of high temps below freezing, we cracked the barrier and got some open water on Milwaukee's inner harbor and that brought the diving ducks back within photo range again. :^) (of course it's back to the deep freeze again this week, but we'll take what we can get)

Man, it's been a long tough winter. The diving ducks that like to feed on the Zebra Muscles on the harbor bottom have been freezing to death because there has been no open water. The other day, only a few small open sections of water were available on the Milwaukee River, otherwise it has been solid ice out as far as you can see. Today, it did get above 40 degrees for the first time, so perhaps the worst is over. It's still going to be a long, cold spring.

I also checked out the bird feeders at the local nature center, finding nothing extra ordinary, but still fun. It was funny, I was sitting in the car, getting ready to head out and shoot when I kept hearing a phone ringing. ANSWER YOUR PHONE! I thought ...... it was a woodpecker. ~:^]

It appears that we have turned the corner of sorts as we creep towards spring, with temps above 40 degrees yesterday, yet the only open water in the harbor was where the Coast Guard ice breaker last went through. A half dozen fishermen swapped their ice fishing gear for casting rods, and the toll of the terrible winter on birds became evident.

These are all taken with a Canon 1DMkIIn and the 400mm f5.6 lens.
