very nice install, the only thing is i really hate to see a radio in direct heat/sunlight like that, i know they are build to handle it but i like to keep mine in the shade as much as i can.
but the install is very clean. :-)

That's a beautiful install. How hard was it to drill the holes for your mount?

I agree, might have issues later on after a few years in the sun and heat. But as cheap as two meter radios are, you're not risking a ton of money.
edit... that being said, looks sharp (truck and install). That is a good spot for things you might want to look at more often.

Looking closer, I see you installed what I guess is a dual-band antenna. Did you use/are you planning on 440 or did you just use it for the height savings over a 5/8w VHF antenna?

Thank you all for the positive comments. I dig my truck and the radio. I like to take the truck out to play, but also spend the time after to clean it up and take care of it. (Must be the firefighter in me as I have been a volunteer in several states).
Drilling the holes in the fender to mount the bracket was pretty straight forward. As with any drilling / cutting process, sharp tools, measure twice or more, and taking your time make all the difference.
Same goes for taking apart the dash to access the dash "dish" for drilling holes and mounting the radio bracket.
All in all the install took most of the day, but the results are well worth it.

Yes I plan on putting a dual band (or quad band) in he truck. The 271 was the first radio I got after getting my Ham ticket.

The truck is garage kept when not in use most of the time, and I tend to cover the radio when I am out in the sun for a long long time. 2 years and still no problems to date. The 271 is a good sturdy mil-spec radio.
