Laptop displaying APRS data?

Pretty slick install. I'd love a console that wide.

Neat, I've been looking into figuring out an APRS setup, I think it'd be the coolest thing to know when I'm passing by another ham on the road. I know I'm a bit of a geek

This is a separate discussion, but I'm a big fan of UI-View. I've tried APRSpoint, WinAPRS, and Xastir, but I came back to UI-View. With Precision Mapping and the PMAP server installed, UI-View has zoomable, scrollable maps with reasonably current map data and it has most all of the APRS features like messaging, objects, digipeating, etc. I have an old IBM ThinkPad T23 running Windows XP and UI-View that is pretty reliable. I use an Argent Data T2-135 as my tracker which I put into KISS mode to interface with UI-View. The T2-135 is connected to the laptop via the DB-9 RS-232 port on the laptop. I also have a Garmin 276C that is connected to the laptop via an RS-232 to USB converter so that UI-View can get position data. It all seems to work pretty well for me.

If you don't want to carry a laptop computer in your vehicle, you can go with an Argent Data OT2 or T2-135 tracker (Tracker2 | Argent Data Systems) connected to a Garmin nuvi 350 GPS unit. The Garmin will display waypoints of APRS stations near you based on beacons received by the tracker. Or go with a Kenwood TM-D710. It can generate waypoints that it can feed back to a Garmin mapping GPS unit.

I have heard of using a regular garmin to get data to an interface- but i did not know it went both ways and actually plotted other users- this would be neat to play around with-- do you know if it is compatible with any nuvi unit?- i have a garmin nuvi 205- i might want to check this out-- thanks----

This feature in the Argent Data Tracker2 series works with the Garmin Fleet Management Interface. Here's a link to the wiki on Argent Data's web site that talks about FMI:

The austin antenna works great and is flexible enough to take some abuse from parking garages and low overhangs-- performance is pretty good- i can hit the dallas 2 meter repeater from here in mckinney at full strength- (about 30 miles or so)--

The short antenna is a maxrad 800nhz+ antenna- i have it hooked up to the uniden bct15 scanner- works great!!!- i can pick up dallas pd/fd from 30 miles away- they are running uhf also-- trunked is pretty good- but really only effective for the county you are in---
