Default 2011 Ford Fusion HP1 Install

I've used the extremely versatile ProClips in my other installation. The ProClip options for 2011 Ford Fusions were limited and I wanted to try something different for the installation of my HP-1 in a 2011 Ford Fusion so I based my install on a Ram car seat bolt mount.

The setup:
  • RAM POD 1 Seat Bolt Floor Mount with 1" Diamond Ball
  • Uniden BCKHP-1 mounting bracket
  • Garmin GPS 18x PC
  • Uniden BWZG1844001 GPS cable
  • Larsen Tri-Band with trunk lip NMO mount

The results:

Great visibility, sight line is close to central control cluster, HP-1 does not obstruct view of roadway. The placement is within easy reach and close enough for clear audio without an external speaker. GPS reception on the dash below windshield is excellent. I used black industrial strength Velcro to attach the GPS to the dashboard and it's very secure. Cable management with black flex conduit and Velcro cable wraps makes for a clean install. I have a Fosmon Triple Socket USB Auto Car Cigarette Charger Adapter + USB Outlet Plug on order to clean up the power adapters without needing to direct wire the GPS and HP-1. Other possible upgrades include an external speaker.

Downsides:
  1. The Ram flex mount has a tendency to vibrate/jiggle a bit over rough roads and bumps.
  2. Due to the seat bolt location, the installation limits the forward travel of the passenger seat.

Questions, comments, critiques welcome.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPod; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_2_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8C148 Safari/6533.18.5)

Looks great. The wires being grouped together in the split loom (is that what its called?) looks professional

Very nice !!! Taking the time to clean up the wires & use some split loom makes all the difference. I'm picky about stuff like that, LOL.

I'm a fan of the antenna you've got also. Its a good performer.

A+

Thanks. Yes, split loom, flex loom, conduit, perfect for neat freaks.

Thanks. For a permanent or semi-permanent install, I can't stand a clutter or tangle of wires. I was using an Austin Spectra but switched to the Larsen and the performance is better IMHO and the look is much more streamlined/covert/low profile.

Next step is to install a Stridsberg 4-port multi-coupler and get ProClips for my iPhone 4 and PSR-800.

How did you find the right size holder for the RAM mount? I'm looking at RAM mounts for various radios to put in my new car, but I can't seem to find any real good way to look for the right size.

I knew the HP-1 mounting bracket has the diamond pattern, so I ordered the RAM mount with the diamond mount to fit the HP-1 bracket perfectly. YMMV with other radios.

Does the antenna get scrunched when you open the trunk lid?

I bought a 2010 Fusion a few days ago. My install will probably look a lot like yours...trunk lip antenna mount, and gooseneck Lido Mount for an FTM-350. Haven't started quite yet.

Looks great!

What kind of antenna is that, and how did you run the cables to it?

@wuzafuzz it doesn't bend the antenna when the trunk is opened.

@GB1952 thanks!

@gr8rcall it's a Larsen Tri-band with NMO trunk lip mount

Sorry, to answer your 2nd question: I ran the antenna cable under the trim & carpeting along the passenger's side door sills to the trunk. Pretty easy access.

great setup! my choice of installation would been to attach under the console using the existing bolts from the glovebox sub rail running under the lip on the right.same position yet allows full range of the seat.otherwise,i wouldn't change a thing.

How does your RAM Mount gooseneck arm hold up? Any bouncing around, etc when on rough/bumpy terrain/roads?

Thanks. I considered other bolt anchor points other than the seat bolt, but decided that the arm was better suited to be positioned vertically as designed to minimize/reduce any bouncing or vibration (see below).

It's holding up fine, just as good as day 1. There is some vibration especially on bumpy roads but during normal driving conditions the vibration is minimal to totally stable.

Have you tried the HP-1 while traveling and used the zip code or the GPS function to switch to different freqs?
