A digital scanner will not work better than an analog scanner ... it just works differently.
As a general rule .. you can expect a scanner to be able to monitor a system for the amount of distance that the system is designed to cover. For example .. the Calgary Digital system can be monitored in the Calgary area. The system will become less likely to be monitored the further you get away from Calgary.
Likewise .. the systems in Edmonton can be heard in the Edmonton area, you will not be able to hear them in Calgary or Red Deer, as they are not designed to cover those areas.

That is a very difficult question to answer .. but generally you will be fine to listen to analog communications, as long as they are not encrypted.
I would recommend checking out the scanners you are interested in at: Scanner Master - Police Scanners by Uniden Bearcat, AOR and Radio Shack.
They have some good articles on their site .. and will help you choose a scanner.

I don't live in Calgary .. but I own a PSR500 and it is a great scanner. I also know that many of those scanners have been sold to Calgary scanner users. I have used my PSR500 scanner in Calgary ... and have listened to Calgary police. I don't know about fire and ems .. as I haven't personally done it, but from what I know that scanner will work just fine for those as well. I am sure if I am wrong .. someone from Calgary will let you know.

Do you know by any chance how far these PSR 500 radios go in distance and are they capable of monitoring analog frequencies as well?

The radio is capable of listenng to analog signals.
Range is dependent on nmerous factors, receiver sensitivity, IMD, antenna system, urban/rural environment, etc. good rule of thumb would be a range around 30 to 50 miles.
