Im a newbie to this so sorry if the question sounds dumb.
Here it goes. Im trying to tune in to the spvm. But some mentioned that recently they are encrypted? Is there still anyway to tune in? And if yes what do i need exactly to do so?

What type of scanner do i need? And can the spvm be decrypdted?

Thank you!

No. There are now on SERAM and encrypted. Encrytpion is impossible to crack without a key.

The SERAM system failed at least twice recently, let's hope that they get pissed enough to go back to the analog system.

To be exact..the Montreal has had 4 significant system failures with the SERAM radio system since jan 1 2016..
The Montreal Firefighters union (APM) and the Montreal Police union (FP) have both filled complaints Qc workers health and safety assoc. Claiming the failures of this new radio system claiming it is putting Police..Fire. And citizens in danger.
The Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre met with the company that designed and sold this system to the city demanding it be fixed once and for all.. And the mayor submitted a bill to company to Cover the costs of 100s of cell phones the depts have had to distribute to their people in the field in case this (more likely should say ) When the system goes down again. The company has agreed to install a back up system in the near future to cover any future failures..
Total cost so far..is 74 million and counting. What a joke this system is..

And no..there is no way to decode the Police side of the system.

If you can get the key, then the SPVM has a very serious security problem. If you did get the key, what would you do with it? Do you have a radio that can accept it? Because consumer scanners can't.

You're much better off doing as another poster said and hoping the SPVM goes back to in-the-clear.

The 'key(s)are random 256bit(most likely) hexadecimal numbers. Hopefully they are changed regularly.

The only likely way to get it is to be employed by who ever runs the system. Even then the keys are likely fairly compartmentalized.

Hell is more likely to freeze solid than you getting the key(s)

Private key (or shared key) cryptography is the most secure and uncrackable thng there is around. Even if we come up with computers powerful enough to try every possible key on a chunk of audio, the authorities will then double the number of bits again and we'll have to wait for another century...

Public key cryptography in comparison is dependent on the ability of computers to factorize big numbers, which is a much less tedious operation than trying every possile key and still it's safe and secure as of today.

Asymmetric encryption will not be practical unless you are looking to add confidentiality among the users of the system. In this case the trunk system will ensure this and you can go to simple encryption using only 1 key for all users and action.

If you look around you will find serious study of the digital voice encryption over radio wave implementation and you will find out the systems have undergo a lot of security trade off to keep the "live" portion of the communication.

At the end of the day the system was designed to keep the average job off and certainly work.
