Default Console

instead of buying an expensive console from Havis or Jotto... what do i need to build my own .... All I want is a simple console with cupholders and a flat surface to mount my mobile head and speaker for my scanner... I have a 04 Tahoe Police Package w/out a console.

I've seen a lot of them built out of 1/2 particle board and covered in automotive carpet, like building a speaker box, then use some rack mount rails on the top corners to fasten in face plates.

There is a lot of examples in the installation pictures on here!

Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry8330/4.5.0.77 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/105)

Take dementions from one of the commercial sites, cut some "brackets" from angle braces and viola!

DONT use partical board, use MDF.. Not only will it look better it will hold screws and paint better.

There are a couple of issues with the particle board. The first one is that it doesn't like to get wet.
the glue falls apart and the wood swells. Second issue is the screw holes wear out real easy. It is
too soft to stand up to repeated screw action. The hole will strip out on the second or third time
you go to tighten down on the screw. It is hard enough that trying to drive staples into it to retain
any carpet is real difficult.

You might be better off fabricating the box with steel or thick aluminum angle brackets to hold it
together. Like someone suggested, use some steel rack rails for the top sides to hold down the
face plates. But in the long run, by the time your all done building your own box, your labor time
alone will eat up a number of days time just putting this thing together. Then you still have the
time and effort to mount it in the vehicle. Don't forget the time to wire it up and install all the radios
you want in it. I don't know about you, but I don't have that much free time in a year to devote
to a project like this.

You might think the cost of a commercial unit is high, but what is the cost of the days you will
spend building it yourself. Consider how it will look when your done. If your good with your
hands and good with tools, that is one thing. But the average person doesn't have those skills.

but what about people who are cash strapped? i have a 95 dakota w/ automatic tranny. so naturally my tranny hump is free. i am yet to find a console that will fit that space with room for 3 radios/scanners plus cup holders.

If you are cash-strapped, then no commercially-made solution will suit your needs. If you can afford it, JottoDesk has generic consoles that will do the job. I'm sure Havis has them, too.

Take a look at: Jotto Desk

The medium or short consoles will hold three radios.

That's what i meant, MDF, its made the same way as particle board and sold right next to the particle board. Medium Density Fiberboard, aka particle board with a little more wood fiber in it.

And if you put equipment rack rails on the front edge you don't have to take screws in and out of the wood.

Anywhoooo... Lots of ways to do it.
