Default Mini-UHF Tool

What size die is appropriate for the installation of a mini-UHF and what are the proper steps to install.

The twist on conectors do not give as good of connection as I can tell the difference in my mobile configuration.

If someone can point me in the right direction I would appreciate it!

Are you talking about the crimping tool? If so just go to radio shack and purchase their professional crimp tool and it will tell you which size to use for certain connectors. -JOEYD

You will need to get the crimper from Tessco or another Two Way radio equipment provider. Radio Shack will not have what you need. TESSCO-Wireless Network and Mobile Communications Products: Network Infrastructure, Mobile Devices & Accessories, Tools & Test Equipment

I am looking for the tool to crimp the pin and the sleeve on a standard 3 piece mini-UHF connector for VHF/UHF/800mHz applications.

Remember the crimper die size is based on the size of the wire you are using, as well as the connector.

A simple search on the term "crimp tool" turns up many threads but see the one below that I point out a very good choice as a crimp tool for what you need. Its best to purchase the set with the tool and 2 dies
so that you can crimp a variety of crimp connectors.

dont go to radio shack please... overpriced and junky crap is what they sell

i recommend paladin tools series 1300 style or something like that

something that is along those specs - so its 50-70 bucks? you only have to buy it once

Paladin Tools

dies are not that expensive

and to FINALLY answer your question

mini uhf for rg-8x you use .255 and .060

for rg-58 etc you use .213 and .068

easy way to do these (like bnc..tnc.sma etc ) is to slip ferrule over coax - cut back center cable just enough to crimp on center pin - make sure it holds - then strip the rest back using the connector as a guide - you usually want the insulation stripped back to where the knurled part of the connector changes to smooth (usually) and then slip ferrule up over shield and it creases the shield - trim the shield with scissors and then crimp ferrule - works great no measuring

as a general rule (if you dont know the actual size to use) - go bigger on the crimp hole

you can always go smaller and try another crimp - if its too big it wont affect it -

BUT if you go too small - you will break the pin(s) or crush the coax

special note - if you are going to crimp 9913 connectors - you need the die for it 9913 uses a .128 for center pin - as far as i know - a die like a rfa4005-02 or equiv has .100 .128 and .429 on it

I must agree with avtarsingh - DO NOT go to radio shack for crimp conn's or tools as they do sell
junk in this arena and Paladin is also a good choice. Whatever you do, do yourself a favor and purchase
a multiple die set along with the tool so you can do a variety of connectors - if you don't you will wind
up cursing yourself down the road when another type connector needs to be crimped.

PS - good info in your post avtarsingh - thanks
