To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I am trying to install a Yaesu 7900r in my 2008 Ford F350. I have seen others recommend that I should use heavier gauge power wire and not use the factory wiring kit for the power supply. Looking at the Yaesu power kit I assume I just need to add ring terminals and its good to go. Can anyone recommend a better way to do it with specifics on size of wire, fuses and such. This is my first install. Thanks for the help

If all you are running is the radio, and the stock power cable will reach, it will work fine as is.

There are a few reasons why you would need to go to a larger gauge cable:
1. The distance to the power source.
2. Increase in current draw.

The longer the wire is, the more voltage drop there will be. This shouldn't be an issue for this radio if you are using the stock power cable. Upgrading to a larger gauge isn't going to fix anything. While it may reduce the amount of voltage drop that the stock power cable has, the result of upgrading isn't going to amount to anything noticeable.
If you are only running that radio, then needing additional capacity isn't required.

Where you might want to increase the cable size is if you are planning on adding additional radios in the foreseeable future. Running wiring can be a time consuming task, so if you think you might want to add more radios down the road, put in a larger power feed now.
I ran a 6 gauge power feed in my truck to a point behind the rear seat. I have a distribution block there where the power is fed to two different radios. It was much easier to run one larger cable than two smaller ones.

Using the stock cable is fine. Just make sure you make good connections. Make sure the wiring is well protected agains sharp edges, heat and other damage.

I don't have any plans to add more than this radio. So with that being said, I am going to put the transceiver under the back seat and remote mount the face in the overhead. The factor cable is nine foot with a t connector. I was planning on cutting it off and replacing with and 30amp Anderson powerpole. Then running 12gauge from the back seat to 15 amp ATC fuses then to ring terminals. Do you think that would be safe. Also being that you have a truck did you have to added a lot of grounding straps to the bed and hood. Thanks for the help still trying to learn all this.
