• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

We remove every auto-reset breaker that comes through our shop. They usually have melted wiring attached to them, hence why we remove them and never use them ourselves.

What do you use? I just replaced a burnt max fuse holder with a 40 amp maxi fuse melted. I was not happy.... I installed a cooper bushman manual reset. Problem is its under the hood and not waterproof.

We use a combination of fuses/holders depending on the install. Usually it's a maxi fuse/holder for high-current and ATC for everything else. 9 times out of 10, we'll run a maxi from the battery to a solenoid, which is controlled with switched power from the fuse panel under the hood. Then the power from the solenoid is fed to our fuse panel that we install which feeds all of our switched power applications.

Fuse holders are not perfect, especially if the contacts are loose. I've seen melted maxi holders in the past too. The problem with the auto-reset breakers is that they keep resetting even when there is a major problem. We have a very large fleet of vehicles with users from all walks of life and the only sure fire way to make them bring the vehicle in is when the equipment doesn't work. Auto-reset breakers usually will allow the equipment to keep functioning, which causes more problem if the user doesn't bring the vehicle back at the first sign of a problem. If a fuse opens, they will come to the shop immediately for us to investigate why the fuse opened.

Previous owner of my pickup had a sub system behind the back seat. He of course pulled the box and amp when he traded the truck but not the cabling. After checking how he ran power from the battery, I decided that I'd use his power lead to power my radio equipment (nice 4 ga). I ended up finding these little guys at the local electronics store. I need to install a master fuse at the battery for it but haven't gotten around to it yet.

You might check out some european upfitter forums to see how they do their "cruisers" as I seem to remember VW being one of the common choices over there. I know one of the larger two-way companies only makes remote mount radios but I don't know if they put the RF decks in the trunk like we do here in the US.
