We use a combination of fuses/holders depending on the install. Usually it's a maxi fuse/holder for high-current and ATC for everything else. 9 times out of 10, we'll run a maxi from the battery to a solenoid, which is controlled with switched power from the fuse panel under the hood. Then the power from the solenoid is fed to our fuse panel that we install which feeds all of our switched power applications.
Fuse holders are not perfect, especially if the contacts are loose. I've seen melted maxi holders in the past too. The problem with the auto-reset breakers is that they keep resetting even when there is a major problem. We have a very large fleet of vehicles with users from all walks of life and the only sure fire way to make them bring the vehicle in is when the equipment doesn't work. Auto-reset breakers usually will allow the equipment to keep functioning, which causes more problem if the user doesn't bring the vehicle back at the first sign of a problem. If a fuse opens, they will come to the shop immediately for us to investigate why the fuse opened.
