12V Power for GRE/RS Base/Mobile for Multiple Locations
I've seen several questions relating to this issue as each model has come available. Hopefully this is easy to follow and could perhaps be made a sticky in both GRE and RS forums? I have combined some information from other threads and members. Thanks for contributing.
!!! WARNING: This is NOT for portable or handheld units which require other than 12v volts. User is responsible for determining proper voltage, polarity, fuse size, and plug size. Base/Mobile units generally do not need 12v voltage to 6 or 9v adapter devices.
A)
The simplest and cheapest is to use the 12v hardwire cable with fuse that came with the unit in the box and attach a cigarette lighter plug only to the cable. Positve to red and negative to black in most US vehicles.
B)
Order a second cable from GRE or RS (Parts departments, not found in stores) and attach as in A.
Radio Shack:
RSU Number: 12429254
Description: CABLE ASSY DC W/2A FUSE
$10.27 on 7/8/09
C)
1. Purchase a 12v coiled extention cord-male plug on one end, female outlet on the other. These can be found at some big box and some automotive stores.
2. Cut off female end and excess coil so its the length you want.
3. Identify positive and negative leads of the cord.
4. Cut the original scanner hardwire cable to remove excess wire making it as short as possible. Best if you leave fuse holder in the line or move it near the scanner end if needed.
5. Attach red wire from hardwire cable to previously identified positive lead from coiled cord.
6. Attach black wire from hardwire cable to previously identified negative lead from coiled cord.
D)
If you do not have or do not wish to use the original hardwire cable or order another then:
Follow 1,2, and 3 in C and make sure there is the proper size fuse somewhere in positive lead;
4. Purchase P/N 171-6014 (T) type solder plug or similar of correct size for your unit from Mouser Electronics or other sources.
5. Solder previously identified positive lead to the center pin on the plug.
6. Solder previoulsy identified ground lead to the outside pin on the plug.
