If you don't need pl or trunking, the Pro-137 makes a great conventional scanner especially for the price. Compared to other $99 offers, you get up to 1.2 ghz coverage, triple conversion, alpha-tagging, and a smaller overall handheld unit than the typical scanner brick. Not to mention a really good belt clip system.
I just reprogrammed mine for non-nascar use and it works great. I just don't use the "car" button, although one could put that to use. And I have never seen the red-faceplate versions - just the anodized-blue / silver models in real life.
If you like how the Uniden 396 / 330 series operates, you'll have no problems with this simplified unit - although the channel storage is not dynamic, but a conventional 10x100 matrix.
If you only do conventional scanning and need alpha-tagging, this is definitely worth looking at whether you are into Nascar or not.
