I have both, the 197 and the 106, they are first in my book.

Thumbs up

I've had my Pro-197 since 12/08 and I'm very pleased with it. But, I just bought a Uniden BCD996XT last week and it picks up digital stations that my 197 has never picked up and they're on the same antenna. I do think the 197 does a little better on conventional and LTR stations than the Uniden.

Hey Alabama,

The opportumity to buy a Pro-197 at a sale price sounds interesting.
Please tell me more about the RS sale for $279 and the F&F coupon.
Thanks
HCH

It is a really nice scanner, I truely enjoy mine.

I believe, however, if I had the choice to make again, I would have gone with a GRE PSR-600 which is the same scanner from the actual manufacturer. There were some issues earlier in the year with Radio Shack's reluctance to release a firmware upgrade. I have come to believe if Radio Shack stops handling the Pro-197, it will stop supporting the scanner, leaving owners high and dry. The GRE firmware will not work with the Pro-197 or vice versa.

As far as actual performance of the Pro-197, I am tickled to death.

I purchased a 197 last year at end of Oct for 400 bucks then 2 days later (early Nov) they offered a F&F coupon for an additional 30% off.

Even though the coupon clearly stated *not to be used with other sale offers*, my shack refunded the 400 bucks, resold the scanner to me for 400 bucks then applied the additional 30 % which made the cost 279.99 + VA tax of 4.5%.

The Shack may have noticed a bunch of scanners on Ebay soon after the F&F deal above so maybe they will do F&F this year starting Nov 18 or 31 days after recent sale of 400 bucks. If so, ALRS will pay 350 + tax.

Default My thoughts - Pro197

The scanner does have much bette reception on VHF Hi, Lo and UHF than did the Pro2096.

However, programming it is a nightmare!

I finally copied my Pro2096 data into the 197 nd got it to receive. But, setting up the different backs isn't nearly as easy as the 2096.

Locking something (or a talkgroup) out is confusing....

That's just me....
