Radio Shack Repair
I just sent my 2096 in last week to have the screen fixed (vertical lines thru text) Any chance it will be fixed when I get it back?

Im gonna go with no. I bought my 2096 in October 2007, from that point it was in their shop more than on my shelf. The first issue was in March 2008 when the volume/squelch knob broke off the circuit board. They had it almost four months before it was sent back to me, so that extended my warranty an additional three months. Then in November 2008 the display started going out, vertical lines in the display making it look like overmodulation on an oscilloscope. Shortly afterwards the display went blank, the yellow backlight would still come on but where the text should be was just black. The crazy thing was if you unplugged the unit for a few hours then plugged it back in and turned it on, it seemed to work fine. But when you pressed buttons you immediately noticed there was no reaction then the display would go out again. So I sent it back to the repair shop, they had it roughly 9 days and sent it back after replacing the RF board. I tested it there in the store, the manager saw it still wasnt working right and sent it back. Four months later their website showed it was back in the store so I went and picked it up. It was working great, but then I noticed a little nick in the screen and looked at the serial number, it was a different radio. They had replaced my radio with either a store demo or a used unit they bought off ebay. On the repair slip it said "replaced radio, unknown issue".

I'd think they'd either send it back fixed *or* get you a new one..

I have never had a problem with RS repairing any of my scanners. I was surprised how fast I got it back too, always feels longer than it really is.

I have had a few go back over the years to the repair centers in Amherst, NY and also FL. They always come back working perfectly. No complaints from me on their service. Usually takes about 2-3 weeks though from start to finish and decently priced.

Related question: I was told by my local RS store (which the 800 number refers you to) that in sending in older scanners past 5 years old for repair, that these may not be able to be repaired due to lack of parts. But the only way to find out is to send the unit in at a charge of 25 dollars. Is this really true? If it is then haveing an older scanner repaired is a $25 dollar gamble. Is this really what you have to do?

I just sent in my Pro 96 had to pay $20 up front, got it back in around 2weeks everything repaired and tested. Final cost was just under $50 including the $20 that I sent it in with. They also threw in a Coupon for $15 off my next purchase.
