Because some of us do not like to download unknown files. Had you actually followed the link the only option was to download "something".

Ok sorry I posted the link. All it is, is a site for RS customers to go to so they can setup their trial membership to RR and get a trail version of Butel for their scanner.

Edit: I called the local RS store and they said it's in the computer as "discontinued" at a current price of $29.99.

Just a quick addition to this thread, I just tried the cable that I use for my Yaesu HT's, no part number and had it to long to remember, but it works fine on the MFJ 8322 rebranded version of the GRE PSR-300. May be able to use others as well......I use the same cable for FT-60 and VX7R, with adapters.

I do not own an RS scanner, but have looked at my old Texas Instruments TI-83 calculator programming cable several times wondering if it would work on these scanners. Anyone tried it?

No. The "stereo to mono" adapter is so that GRE cables can be used on Uniden-made scanners. The old COM version (RS/GRE) cable does not work on the PRO-164/PSR-300 because they switched the connection one of the signals is on. The USB cable works on the '164 because it transmits on both connections.

200-0546 programming cable
New cable released. Stock number 200-0546. Picked one up today for 34.99$.Comes with trial software, plus 2 free downloads from radio reference. It's Butel. I'm a first time user of the programmer.it was easy to download on vista but to save the 2 free files was a pain.It puts them in a .bin file. Not much instructions but I was able to load the 2 free files. They had plenty of the old ones for $19.95.You get a 7 day free trail.

Not quite.
Previous GRE-made scanners (e.g. PRO-92 through PRO-97) had two conductors on a mono jack: a single bi-directional data line and a ground. The PC/IF port on the PSR-500 and PSR-300 families has three conductors on a stereo jack: Tx, Rx, and ground. Those newer scanners expect a cable that supports separate Tx and Rx.

Thank you for setting me straight about the connections in the scanner. But I stand on two points:
1. The mono adapter is NOT needed on GRE-made scanners.
2. The USB cable transmits on both connections (and receives on one).

Just to add some fun confusion to the discussion...the Uniden Japan manufactured PRO-433, 528, 160 and 162 scanners do NOT use the pigtail adapter. They will also all work with the adapter-less GRE cable right out of the box.
