What Sq mode setting does everyone prefer to use on the 197?

It varies by what I'm trying to listen to. For most content I choose none, because none is needed. But there's a few things where users are sharing a frequency at some distance where I can hear both, but they use different tones, so I program them.

I also rarely program in a tone, even if one is listed. For scanner use a tone will only restrict what you hear and slow down the scan. With no tone, the scanner simply checks for something on that frequency but if you have a tone programmed it must also check for a valid tone if a signal is present (and if the signal isweak, it may take time to figure out if the tone is correct or not).

Also if the band opens up and a great signal is booming in, you won't hear it unless the tones match up between the two agencies. At times, these distant signals may be strong enough to overpower your local system enough to distort the tone decode process enough that you may even miss local transmissions.

U should set the PL/CTCSS tone to "Search" so as not to miss the first part of transmission as that is one of the remarks on the GRE web site....
