Default Can I run new files on top of old ones, if that makes sense?

I want to know on my Pro-197 if I have to reset it everytime I add or change the files that Im editing on ARC500 or can I just plug in my cord and run it right over top of the ones that are running now?

When ever you up load to the radio it wipes out what ever is in it.

When you program a scanner using software, the "Upload to scanner" (or whatever your specific software calls it) can be thought of this way. "Make my scanner's programming look just like it does in this program." If you had 1000 things programmed in the scanner and only a single thing programmed in the software, after the "Upload to scanner" operation is complete, you'll only have that single thing programmed into your scanner.

The software will wipe out all existing programming in your scanner and replace it with how you have it set to program in the software. If you want to add something to your existing programming, you should download your existing scanner's programming into the software and add (or edit) what you want changed and then upload that to your scanner. You could also take the file you saved when programming it earlier instead of downloading, but you may lose anything you may have changed manually in the scanner.

I like to start with a download from the scanner when making any changes and save a fresh copy of this prior to making any changes (use a unique name when saving!!!) so I can go back to it if I make things worse with my new changes. It also allows me to track what changes I have made to the programming so I can find anything I may have lost along the way. The files aren't very big so you can keep loads of them on your computer. I generally name them something like Pro-197-20121119-Start (for the pre-change download file) and Pro-197-20121119-RebandingChanges (for the post-change file I uploaded). The 20121119 is the date I did the programming (YYYYMMDD format) - the year is first so it will sort properly. You may have a better naming convention, but this works for me.

Wirelessly posted (Moto Droid Bionic: Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; U; Android 4.0.4; en-us; DROID BIONIC Build/6.7.2-223_DBN_M4-23) AppleWebKit/534.30 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile Safari/534.30)

Ibid on incorporating date (and time) into file names. Just a thought on making an empty template starting file. There are guides in the wiki and threads in the forums that discuss tweaks of various settings. I opted to reset the scanner in total, read and save the empty file. Using the software I made the changes I thought might be useful and re-saved the empty file. That tweaked file serves as a starting point for any new files I opt to create. HTH.

If I like what I have in my radio, I immediately send the file (Download from scanner) to a file on the pc. If I really like it, I save it on my daily offsite backups. That way if something goes wrong I always have a ground zero to go back to.
