GRE built lots of scanners for R/S, as did Uniden and Uniden is made in China not Fort Worth.

No, Uniden 'office' is in Texas, their scanners are manufactured in the Far East.

Both GRE and Uniden make scanners for Radio Shack.

Then when the Radio Shack scanners go down in price they have a sale and that's when you get the RS unit.

Radio Shack doesn't make anything, and hasn't since about 1981. They are supplied by manufacturers who let them put the Radio Shack or Realistic name on their products.
Right now they appear to be a clearinghouse for NexxTech crap.

o.k.things are changing on who makes what.As far as the 396xt goes,I wish to re-phrase myself about the 396xt's -close call- functionEver since I got it to search, the close call has gotten better. It went with me today at the memorial bridge. It did good. Caught all the locals, and 100.3 fm... I give that function an 8 out of 10. However, searching 1 thing or another. You have to tell it if you are searching for p25 systems, analog, or trunk..Difference from the 106 is-106 can search p25 and analog at the same time. Tune is the function to use to identify trunked systems.106 has alarms for searches-my 396xt does not.

Toss up
I have all 3 brands
For outright scanning, the PSR 500 and 600 do the best job for me, except when it comes to digital encryption.
Half the area is p25 encrypt on the fly, more moving that way.
The 396xt, 996 xt and hp1 fixed that issue.
In hindsight, I wouldn't have bought the psr800.
I get that it's easy to use for some, but doesn't suit my needs.
The fact that it will chew up a set of 2500 MaH in 5 hours, and the encryption delay weigh against it's usefulness.

mainetrunk, I don't think you have a full understanding of the 396XT's capabilities.

I agree with this statement. I don't have a 396XT, but I understand that the Uniden products are extremely nice and are very much comparable to any GRE/RadioShack product. While I have a Pro-106, I wouldn't say its better than a Uniden as I have no experience with them.
You can't really judge a brand without at least having one in your hand and using it for a little bit. Just reading about it doesn't really give you much about what the brand is really about. Only people that have owned both can really have an opinion on which one is better. Other than that, it's really the classic Ford vs Chevy and Coke vs Pepsi argument (and people can/will make up stuff about the other brand to get you to like what they like).

the 396XT's capabilities.
O.K, tell me what it can do outside of--(this is gonna be good)
scan
trunk
search--set hold and delay option is nuts
signal stalk
fm radio capability--I'll take that ****4
gps--the old set up is nuts-lots of wire
fire tone out.recieves transmissions while on tone out mode
99 banks---wow, give it 20 v-scanners like that
pol-hp-search
air/mil air
cb
gmrs-all searches
ham---analog
marine-wx-wx alert
Whats left thats any good? Press less than 5 buttons for something I'm missing?
Remember-its only an opinion-still a great scanner
you guys tell me-who wins. I go with pro 106 51 to 49..% P.S--I got both,

Sounds like you have figured it out yourself. Open your wallet and go for it, you can always trade it in for a snowsled, AYUH

I 1st got a pro106, then a deal was shoved in my face for the 396xt. I only took it cause it is p25..I got the disc, and got lost so easy.Well, I took my pro106 knowledge and applied it to the 396xt.. 2 years later, I finally got it the way I want. But, I am also constantly tinkerring with the pro106/197. I call this match ( a draw ) equal tech-just master both and all is awesome.
