PRO-106 Need software and/or firmware update?
Hi, I received a PRO-106 for Christmas. The date code is 06A12. Can I program it as it is for the rebanded Motorola Type II SmartZone Omnilink system in Salt Lake County, Utah, or do I need the RS software and/or firmware updates dated 06-22-12? Thanks.

Radio Shack doesn't make the programming software. You can use a software called WIN500. You can download it from Win500: PSR-500, PSR-600, PRO-106, PRO-197, PSR-310, PSR-410 Scanner Software for Data Management, Monitoring, and Control. You can get a 30 day trial for free. You might consider getting a premium subscription to this site. You will also have to get a cable from rat shack to connect the computer to your scanner to do the programming. It a little extra but it's well worth it in the end. Hope you enjoy the 106. I sure do.

I think he meant the actual scanner firmware.
I think the latest one is 1.9 or 2.0? Either way, doesn't hurt to get it. I don't think the last few updates affected trunking rebanded systems so you may be okay without it.
The poster above me does have a point- programming software may be more useful when programming rebanded systems.

Get the update if you are scanning a P25 system. Every update has helped improve this for me.

Thanks for the info. The scanner has uP App Ver:RF2.0, DSP AppVer:RF1.4, DSP VocVer:RF1.0. I guess what I'm asking is, is it already capable of receiving the rebanded frequencies? My PRO-97 still picks up plenty of 800 MHz frequencies, but it won't trunk because of the rebanding. Will this PRO-106 trunk the way it is now, once I get it programmed, or does it need any of the available updates to make it work with the rebanded frequencies? Thanks again.

As for updates, asurnin is relatively correct for updates. You don't need it, but it wouldn't hurt either.

Manually you can, it takes time, but think of it as a learning experience. if you are out on the road and want to add something to a scan list, you'll know how to do it. Also as mentioned above in a previous post, a good program is Win500. It is what I use and many others use it too. There is also Arc500 and one or two others out there.
The update can be downloaded to your computer, then transferred to your scanner using the proper cable available at Radio Shack, or the GRE cable, both of them are the same.
Find the latest updates here RadioShack PRO-106 39,000-Channel Digital Handheld Scanner : Handheld Scanners | RadioShack.com
You should already have the programming cable, it should have been offered in a special deal when you bought the radio. RadioShack USB-PC Scanner Programming Cable : Programming Cables | RadioShack.com

I still think you would have to change the Tables for a Rebanded system I would do the update if you need to check your CPU and DSP versions, I think it was by pressing 3 when you turn it on, but I do remember you got to do it fast Hope this helps

Update
Yes, update your firmware. The latest is 2.0 I believe. It opens up marine bands and other little things. Opinion, always update. Theres a reason the mnf put the update out there.
Then as mentioned, use win500 or arc500. Anything is better than manually inputting all your freq. The older scanners were easy but the Pro106 is a challenge. Not impossible but just a time consumming challenge.
Good luck, have fun!!!!!!
