Go to the RS product page, and usually about 1/2 way down or so, there's a 'PRODUCT SUPPORT' tab...

What firmware do you have? You can check the firmware version levels by pressing '3'
while the scanner's power up welcome message is displayed.

What kind of cable is it? Does it have numbers on it? What are the numbers?
Did you get a cd with it?

Not sure what cable that is. Where did you get it?
Did you install the drivers for the cable?
What Windows are you using?

Google I found this http://www.radioshack.com/graphics/u...irmware108.pdf

When it comes to firmware be very careful step by step. Sometimes when it comes to firmware you need to set the scanner to a specific mode ie holding certain keys on startup. It seems you have to use one of the specified cables? The 20-047 is gray with an orange chip box. Also it comes with a mono adaptor as already stated you need to read the steps and see if that is required or not. The other question I have for you, have you used that cable to program the scanner before? Just to narrow down the comm port issue.

I dont know if Win7 comes with a default driver for the cable or not, but Im going to say it doesnt. The cable I got when I bought mine was # 20-546. Seems like you can use a different cable but I dont know which one it was.

Plug in your cable and go to the Device Manager and look at it. You will probably see a yellow ? next to anything that doesnt have a driver installed for it. Post the ones here if there are any. It sounds like you dont have a driver installed. Seems like there was some people who were having problems with the driver on Win7.

Default Boot Version

Also read that pdf file there's a difference with boot versions as to what exe program file to use based on what you have in the scanner. Boot ver 100 or 101. Maybe that's all that you need to figure out??

From Don Starr's site The RadioShack version (and possibly the GRE version) comes with an "adapter" - a stereo-to-mono adapter approximately 4 inches long. That adapter is not required for any GRE-made scanner, and it must not be used with the PSR-500 family scanners. - found via this link.

I have the 20-047 Radio Shack cable, that 08a07 is also on a label on the plastic case.

Windows 7 does indeed have the correct driver for that cable so you don't need the CD. In reality, the driver on the CD is most likely way older than the one included in Windows 7 and may cause issues the newer ones won't have. Be aware that you'll need the driver to match your OS (e.g. a 32 bit one for the 32 bit Windows 7 and a 64 bit one for the 64 bit Windows 7). The installer may handle this for you, but if you must select which one to get, make sure it matches your OS.

The most recent drivers can be found using a link in this thread if you want the latest version Windows 7 Driver for GRE USB Cable? (Don't worry that the link says GRE and not Radio Shack. GRE makes the cable for Radio Shack so it's the same driver.)
