If you're well within range then its something else, but I had my pro-197 and pro-2096 monitoring a Tower that my location is well beyond the footprint of, and the 197 kept missing about a third of the transmissions from that Tower. However my 2096 picked up all of them. I sold the 197.
You had something else going on. A receiving radio can not cause propagation issues, that is, if you are out of the line of sight (frequency dependent) of the transmitter's antenna, no radio is going to reach up and grab a signal.
