OK Bubba, yes I would say that the $12.99 eBay yellow battery holder is lQQking GREat right now !
I just attempted as promised to purshase that RSU Part # 12228805 for the yellow battery holder
in the RS POS system just now and my result was this message: "Item 12228805 : Not On File"
On a side note, I was going to also order a spare "keytop" membrane and it no longer exists either
I replaced mine once in 4 years due to a "hanging chad" on my down arrow keys carbon contact pad
that made constant contact causing inop with beeping and like someone was pressing the down key.
Other Pro-106 RSU Parts List casualties are 1 of the 2 logic boards, the front case, the BNC jack,
the battery compartment cover and even the beltclip are no longer available ! In lew of all these woes,
does this make a good case for using the PC/IF to program and not wear out your valuable keytop !

Rough. I might just convert my black holder.
Thanks for all the work, though!

I ended up modifying my radio. It's less 'idiot proof' now, but it was free, and I can now recharge batteries in it.

Ironic.. I have the yellow holder (which I regularly use), but want a black one for the times when I might use alkaline batteries, assuming I can't use them with the yellow holder...

Someone can correct me, but I believe you can use alkaline in the yellow holder. Just DO NOT plug in the scanner to AC.

Try eBay or modify your black battery holder or AC/DC adapter it ?
Question: So Michael, did you order it? What's the final result? I also need one ...
Answer: My final result was a dead end as I posted below last month my attempted order results
The RS RSU # 12228805 no longer exists anymore in our Point of Sale system to even order one.
ps ~ All the RS models that used the 4xAA yellow battery holder used that same RSU Part #, etc.
btw ~ The car parts world has aftermarket replacement parts and some very enterprising plastics
company should try to look into reproducing these holders~ they could ask $20 ea all day long !
Below is a link to the GREAMERICA website that shows these battery holders as out of stock ...
I think I will fire off an email to GRE USA, maybe they could have ALINCO make this badly needed item ?
Hmm, this is just but one small step to some easy cash flow ~ I'd ask more than the $5.99 old price !
GRE America, Inc. - grecom scanner receiver, lcd modules, spread spectrum radio, wireless bridge, scanner antenna, scanner pre-amps.

I've been scanning for 18 years and have never switched holders for rechargeable vs alkaline batteries, and I always plug my scanner in with batteries in it, no matter if they're rechargeable or alkaline. I originally didn't do it on purpose, but realized nothing happened so I just use one. The power bypasses the batteries because you can't recharge batteries in the scanner. Rechargeables do not charge in the scanner, which means the power is sent straight to the scanner, not thru the batteries which means you can also use the plug w/ regular batteries in it (and I have hundreds of times in the last 18 years)
My opinion? The only difference is the color so people who aren't so bright don't electrocute themselves. Just like there's a warning on a hose nozzle that says, "Do not spray into electrical outlets"
I could be wrong on this, but like I said, I've been doing this for 18 years and never had a problem.

How did you modify your radio? I'd LOVE to be able to charge batteries in the scanner because I keep it plugged in at home and often at work

The color difference is there "so people who aren't so bright " can see that the yellow and black holders ARE different.

Depends on the scanner you have and whether or not it has been set up to charge the battery. If you have an 18 year old scanner or if you aren't using the yellow battery holder, then it should not charge. Almost all newer models do include some kind of charging in scanner feature, but it's heavily discouraged. If you happen to have a newer one, then you actually do require the yellow holder to charge it for any RadioShack scanner.
There is the issue that is always brought up is that scanners are dumb chargers and easily allow for overcharging of batteries. That means each time you turn the scanner on, it'll start pushing energy into the battery regardless if it is full or not and that leads to batteries melting and ruined scanners. It's even worse when you try it with alkaline. There are plenty of stories about that very issue all over these forums.
