Just checked out Radio Shack's web site and they have the Pro-651 handheld for $255.99 and the Pro-652 base for $271.99. Add a 10.00 off 25.00 coupon and you got a pretty good deal.

See if you can find one at a closing store first. They are hard to find, but if you do you save more. I got a 652 for $180 and could have gotten the 651 also. Opted for the Uniden 396xt for $200. Two other scanners went at similar deals from the same store. If you can't find a closing store this is a prewgood deal.

You will be taxed, as RS has a presence in every state. That applies to Radio Shack eBay sales, too. I got some connectors from them for about 1/3rd of the web price.

They are the same exact unit. The 652 was manufactured by Whistler instead of GRE or whoever made the 197 for Radio Shack. They are identical.

The only difference is you can't do the identical firmware updates for some reason, but there are none yet for the 652.

I bought a WS-1065 for 380.00 a couple of months ago and just bought a new RS PRO 652 for 250.00 yesterday. Same Radio. Just a different color on the faceplate and a name change.

So I am assuming that you can't update the firmware on the PRO-197 and the PRO-652.

Now my question is can you use the Whistler's firmware update from F2.6 to F2.8 for the WS-1065 and apply it to the PRO-652?

Has anybody had the chance or have those two radios to test it??

...
They are identical.

Functionality, they are similar, but not exactly the same. There is some minor hardware changes due to various circumstances and makes them different. There's some things like signal strength indicator settings that are different from the GRE vs. Whistler units among others that hasn't been fully discovered.

So I am assuming that you can't update the firmware on the PRO-197 and the PRO-652.

No, and I would strongly advise no one even try to do this. Especially not on a RadioShack scanner as there is no fix available for bricking it like Whistler model does. F2.8 was released solely as a fix in the event people wiped their firmware trying to install the incorrect firmware. Quoting Don Starr:

The firmware for the various incarnations of this scanner family are not compatible with each other.

PSR-500/600 firmware works only with PSR-500/600
PRO-106/197 firmware works only with PRO-106/197
WS1040/1065 firmware works only with WS1040/1065
PRO-651/652 firmware works only with PRO-651/652

Thanks for the tip tumegpc! Just bought the PRO-652 at the store.
The store price was $399.99 but I asked and they will match web price $271.99.
Also the programming cable was $29.99 but on sale for $19.99.

That's not a "web" only price. The store price is the same as the sale price on the web.

Sounds like they're trying to take advantage. I bought mine recently, when it was on sale for $319.99. I was in a hurry, and didn't notice at the time, they billed me $399.99. I was about to go back and get a credit for the difference, when this new sale came around. So I got a credit for $152.64. Very bad business ethics! That explains why they're going out of business!

Totally Agree! I told them I was leaving to go buy it online when they said they would "match web price". I will have to say I got it programmed last night and love it though!

Here is the store that still has the $399 label. They still have one PRO-651 and one PRO-652.
