Default Pro-83 And VHF-Hi problem

I have been using the Pro-83 for over a year now, and I am stumped. I use it to listen to a lot of business frequencies in my area with little problem. Most of these frequencies are in the 400 mhz range and the 150 to 154 mhz range. I can get most all I need, but I have one particular frequency, 152.915, I REALLY need to hear. I know the frequency is very active and is still in use. If I get within one hundred yards of one of the transmission sources, I can recieve the signal. But cannot hear the responses from other radios communicating with the transmitting signal I am very close to. I have tried using Radio Shack's external vehicle antennae, with not luck. I even tried disconnecting the antennae all together thinking it may be some overload problem in the circuitry. I can get several frequencies very easily in the 154 mhz range with clear reception.

Can someone please help? is this a problem with some pager towers in the area? Or is this model scanner deaf to some of the VHF high frequencies below the 154 mhz range? I am looking to get a Uniden BC246T if this will solve the problem, but will it?

two possibles would be:
1. This is a simplex system and the other radios are too far away to hear with your low antenna.
2. This is the input of a repeater and you don't have the repeater output.

Its in New Iberia, LA. Its a vhf dispatch system for a local farm operation. Nothing top secret, and to my knowledge is not a special encrypted system. The radio transmissions are coming from radio's mounted in farm equipment.

Do you think the PRO-83 is deaf to some VHF High Frequencies?

bviator,

I tracked down the FCC license for the farm you're trying to monitor. It's not a repeater and both sides of the conversation should be on the 152.915 frequency you're listening to.

I do have a PRO-83 and I'm not aware of any problems in the 152 range. I just checked that range on my scanner to see if there were any "birdies" (internally generated scanner noise) and didn't find any.

You should definitely be able to hear those stations well outside of the range you're describing, even with the stock antenna.

Good luck,

-Dan

Dan,

THANKS so much for the kind help. It is nice to see there are folks so willing to help others out with their hobby.

I have heard that there may be some pager towers that can cause interference with some vhf high frequencies. Is this possible?

Or is it possible that the company using the frequency in question has illegally modified there system? I doubt this has happened, but you never know.

What about the possibility that I may just have a defective PRO-83 that is a little deaf in some of the VHF High range?

Thanks.

By any chance... do you have the 'close call/signal stalker' feature on? That could be causing some problems if it's picking up and/or searching for other comms while you're trying to listen.

I am positive I do not have the signal stalker/close call feature on. I stopped using it sometime ago for various reasons. I am stumped on this one.

It's a simplex system, so if the mobiles are low power you may be limited to line of sight to them. The base antenna is higher, so line of sight is further, but if it's also low power, you'd also get limited range.
