Radio Shack Pro-2006 is easy to covert to monitor analog cell phones.

In the USA, all scanners produced for civillians are blocked from receiving the cell phone frequency band. There are exceptions for official Government use.

Aside from that, monitoring cell phones is getting more difficult (or impossile) as technology progresses. Very few scanners can be modified to monitor cell phones.

A good number of scanners can be modified to receive cellular analog frequencies. VERY few cellular phones utilize analog technology.
Short of working for the NSA, trying to listen to cellular phone calls is a huge waste of time, IMHO.

Even if there was something worthwhile to listen to, they transmit and receive on different freqs., so you would need two to get the whole conversation.

If you want to fly to Australia, you could probably find one, but don't plan on smuggling it into the U.S.

I'm sure that you can find a dealer on the net or on Ebay who will happily sell you an unblocked overseas model scanner or receiver and ship it to you. It will clear customs and you will receive it, but then you will find out that there is almost no analog cell phone traffic any more and the cell phone companies are not required to provide analog service after next February (2008), so your $500 (+) investment won't really be that worthwhile.

Actually, the base transmits both sides, just like a repeater.
