Default Rail frequencies to go encrypted?

Someone told me that this is in the plan for the future due to the threat of terrorism so some FEMA fund will pay for them to go DES?

This makes no sense to me at all.

If I didn't think it was possible I would laugh, however since 9/11 between the ignorant pork barrel politicians & cash rich greedy communications conglomerates pulling the wool over the eyes of the public safety sector, be it local, county, state or federal this kind of crap will constantly perpetuate itself. Agencies whose tried & true conventional communications systems are scrapped for taxpayer subsidised prohibitively expensive non-user friendly untested complex communications systems then the FCC (Federal Clown Crowd) in it's infinite wisdom listen to the jerkoff conglomerates low life lobbiest who convince them to change the game with rebanding, frequency spacing & massive reallocation schemes which mean the brand new multimillion dollar communications sytems are immediately rendered obsolete for upgrading to more expensive & unbelievably complex systems whereby just to be a dispatcher would require at least a two year degree just to understand how to key the mike not to mention the fact that an average public safety vehicle will have to be scrapped for SUVs with extra heavy duty suspensions just to accomodate all the heavy communications gear installed in them thus making the comms gear worth more then the vehicle itself. Back to trains, let the nitwits fall for this & all the terrorist will do is just get public train schedules which even a moron could figure out fairly accurately where a train is & where it will be at any given time. DUUUUHH. Like the surgeon said in "The Day After" I don't know how we are gonna fight WWIII but I know how we are gonna fight WWIIII, with sticks & stones, so good buddy, break out that CB radio & donate it to smokey because the way things are going, that's all he will be able to afford. I'm outta here.

I have not heard it either, but why does it make no sense?

Negative... No encryption. These rumors have been swirling around for years. It's not going to happen. Maybe RR cops or something, but that's it.

I really hope they don't do that, but if there's money for it, they probably will. Right now rail comms are one of the few things I can still pick up with my scanners, The police and sheriff and a lot of the fire coms have gone over to the digital stuff in the last few months. There isn't much to listen to around here anymore with a regular scanner unless you are into rail fanning or listening to cabbies and bus drivers all day.

Someone was wrong. There is no such plan, nor Federal funds, nor FEMA requirement.

Sorry, but I've just never seen a rumor as persistent as this one. I think for at least 5 years now this one just refuses to die. I talk with people that work on RR radio systems all the time, and there's just no such thing happening.

"Out with it, tell us what you really think FLRAILMAN."

Heh, maybe when he calms down, that rant written in a fit of rage lacking phrasing and punctuation was awfully hard to read. (;->) He has the right idea though, long before the word terrorist was coined and long before radio there was sabotage against the railroads. For that matter there has been sabotage against ALL of our industry and infrastructure from within and without since the foundation of our country and radio had nothing to do with it.

Oh, I especially like the part about government grants and radio rip-offs. That BTW is only the tip of the iceberg I fondly refer to as government sponsored terrorism for fun and profit.
