Almost busted for scanning near crime scene
Recently I was scanning around 1630 local and heard of a fight nearby. I went to check it out with another scanning friend and we joined up in my car and passed by the supposed fight area several times. After being unable to see anything other than some apparently concerned neighbors in the area we returned to my friends house. Someone called the police with a suspicious circumstance call regarding my vehicle in the area where this fight took place because not long after arriving home like maybe 10 to 15 minutes, a OCSD vehicle arrived at the house. They came to the door and the police encounter started. The officer asked if that was my car parked out front. I said it was my vehicle and the officer then attempted to question me further regarding the call upon which time I stated that I had nothing to say to him. The officer then said I had a guilty conscience to which I replied I have nothing to say to you. The encounter ended abruptly.
Lesson of the day, don't orbit around a crime scene in hopes of seeing something. DUH
Happy scanning

Number One rule of scanning - Never respond to call locations. This can get you arrested and you may loose your equipment. Take Care.

In some cities/counties/states it's illegal to respond to crime scenes or scenes where emergency personnel are. If police see that you consistently do this, you can be arrested and as mentioned above, you'll lose your equipment.

Take it easy there, Hot Rod! You gotta slooowwww down and maybe sitting out front on the porch or something to see something relatively close. But I wouldn't be headin out to calls.

Sell your car asap as you just set yourself up to be a target of the officer that confronted you. Now he will be looking for any little thing to bust your chops about. Get rid of the car, the scanner and move a few towns north and never go back.

There are no US laws against owning a scanner AFAIK - unless you are a felon. There are no laws against driving your car on a public road (except in unusual circumstances). There are laws against interfering with the police and aiding criminals. Peter Sz

As the ol' sayin goes... Curiosity killed the Cat. Get it? You dont want that kind of stigma upon your head. Listen from way afar and stay out of crime scenes and anywhere near them. You are one of the reasons encryption is used.
As the late great Paul Harvey used to say:
Have a nice day!

Depends on the State and the Laws.
Nothing Illegal in the New England States
However the OP's handling of it, could of been better, especially since he seems to like to go to scenes and will likely encounter the same officer again

If being a jerk were illegal you would have gotten 30 years in jail.

Some localities have "No-Cruising" laws.
Drive by three times without good reason may be enough in some places.

If i remember so far back as i was told stories about this crazy person who shows up on these calls, the local police agency upgraded their radios and now they cannot afford a trunked digital scanner lol..

Well, as I see it, you made 2 mistakes that got you in that situation
#1 Running to check out the call-NEVER but NEVER go running to the scene of something like that, it can do nothing but get you in trouble. Obviously, someone saw you lurking around and assumed you were involved in something. That's why the cop showed up at your house. You are lucky it wasn't something involving guns, you could have been shot...
#2 Your attitude with the cop, Even though it may have been embarrassing, you should have just admitted the truth, he may have given you a dressing down for going to a crime scene and a stern warning. By refusing to answer his questions, he now thinks you know something and just arent' talking. You are now on his list and like a previous poster said, he will probably find something to hound you about whenever he sees your car around. You may STILL get your scanner confiscated if he finds you with it later on in your car, even if you aren't doing anything. I recommend getting a different car and staying away from anymore crime scenes if you want to keep your scanner and stay out of jail.

Yep, be a little more careful next time, but congrats on saying the golden 5 words, "I have nothing to say".

Isnt this EXACTLY what every single news reporter and station does? Isnt this how they get 90% of their news, listening to the scanner and driving to the scene to look and take pics/video?
Why is it always ok for the news to do it, but yet an individual not to? Doesn't that count as double standards?
Think of this, its a summer day, school is out. There is a house fire in the neighborhood.
What happens? ALL the kids and parents walk down the street to find out what is going on.
Now is this illegal? Should all the kids and parents be questioned and investigated for arson, just cause they are near the scene and watching?
PD takes this stuff way too far sometimes. I understand him being in the area in a vehicle driving around a few times, but he shouldnt be profiled or harassed in the future. PD did the right thing to quickly check him out, as he MIGHT of had something to do with it, but he shouldn't have to worry about it in the future, unless he gets in the way of investigations or does some other traffic violations or something.
