I Have to Ask My Wife For Permission...
Nothing aggravates me more than hearing about a fellow ham, scanner enthusiasts, or radio hobbyist "having to ask their wife's permission" to drill a hole, mount a radio, or wipe their nose first before taking on a task.
Case in point, a good friend purchased a new vehicle which he primarily drives himself, or occasionally takes the spouse out in it. He had to get permission FIRST before mounting anything, or having any holes or brackets visible or installing after-market radios or accessories.
I've been married 7 years to my current spouse (2nd marriage), and never had to "get permission" to install anything in my car, in the ham shack, etc. Matter of fact, when we got her "new" (used) car recently, one of the first things I did was take it to the radio shop, have the BC780 scanner installed along with the antenna in the middle of the trunk lid (NMO mount). She is pleased with the performance of the radio, and antenna set-up as it works VERY WELL with minimum to no static on all channels. Her previous car had two NMO mounted antennas, as I had a Motorola UHF Maxtrac in there along with the BC780 which we transferred to the "new" car. The subject never even came up about where the antenna was going to be mounted or the radio attached to the underside of the dashboard. All that was necessary was that it worked, and functioned well.
I wonder who wears the pants in the family when a fellow radio enthusiasts says that he "has to get his wife's permission" to do something like that. My ex was a ham, and always had one or two radios in her vehicle(s), and she also was pleased with the performance and never uttered a word about NMO mounts, brackets, or the like prior to the installation.
I just feel sorry for those who have a marriage or relationship where they "need permission" to do necessary things for their hobby from the other partner, spouse, etc. I can understand if they need to discuss spending a few thousand dollars on that low-band rig, but otherwise I just can't figure it out.
