My kid is 16 and studying Latin. Now Esparento, that language is pretty much dead.

Well, in the 7th grade I had to study Latin, and we had a saying:
"Latin is a dead, dead language
Dead as it can be
First it killed the Romans
And now it's killing me!"

Some of the crap I see posted out there should be dealt with. It should not be allowed. It makes the whole board look bad; as if it's populated by a bunch of uneducated, illiterate morons who don't care about themselves or others.
And I don't care if you're on a phone or any other form of portable device.

Yes you are right about reed/read red/ read. i use a spell check from Microsoft office and it is good but like you said proof read your post. and stop drinking the water it makes you look less intelligent. lol ( not meaning you and the water thing people in general )
Merry Christmas.

You mentioned Microsoft Office and cracked me up. It has an excellent lexicon and you can add to the dictionary, very useful for adding British spelling and uncommon words. It does check grammar to a limited degree and suggestions are sometimes funny, funnier still are some of the spelling suggestions that turn out to be a different word entirely.
I can see your point, some posters give the impression they never went to school. The stop drinking the water comment was so obtuse I almost didn't get it. They must be in Mexico and don't drink bottled water from the US, the local stuff makes them ____ their brains out. (;->)
"And I don't care if you're on a phone or any other form of portable device."
You should, my friend's Droid can't send understandable e-mail. Most words look normal but some have substituted characters so I tell him I'm not Luke Skywalker and can't understand R2D2's beeps and bleeps, C3PO is the linguistics droid.

Then tell him to get another device or you will no longer reply to him.
There are a lot of posts on this board and others that I simply won't reply to because of infantile posting styles even if I have the answer to the question they're asking.
If they refuse to make the effort, tough.

Irrespective of how I compose a message, be it a posting in a forum, an email or text message, I always scrutinize what I have written before pressing "send".
Sometimes, though the message may be spelled correctly, and the grammar and syntax are in order, I have to make sure that the content makes sense and addresses the issue at hand. So many things can be misunderstood in an email, or posting, that may have been intended as a joke (for instance), but comes through as an insult.
In addition, I try to ask myself, (when I remember to, that is) the following question: "Do I REALLY need to send this?" Often times the answer is a resounding "NO!!!" and I'll work on it some more. Other times, I'll say "fuggehdaboutit" and click "send" anyway. I almost always regret those instances!

Merry Christmas! Now here's a word game: When do you use the word "Merry", if it's not "Merry Christmas", "Eat Drink and Be Merry", or "He went on his Merry Way"?
I try to help out when I can, but some posts and questions are just painful to read. Yes I know some people are just poor spellers and lack basic grammar - or maybe English is a second language. Some posts go way beyond just that.
I form my opinion of somebody's ability to grasp a solution based upon their ability to form a basic sentence, so if you want to ask a question at a 1st grade level - expect the same caliber responses.
With that, we all have pet peeves. Here are three of mine:

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/6.0 (iPad; CPU OS 6_0_1 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/522.16 (KHTML) Version/6.0 Mobile/12B523 Safari/8234.25)
yes i heared that to last week on my drive home from dayton.

OK Doc, why capitalize merry when it's not a proper name? (;->)
Happy Hanukkah, merry Christmas, but is it merry Kwanza or happy Kwanza? Ah, happy holidays and if you have a bah humbug replace the filter caps. Forget about Jacob, may the ghost of Bob Marley be with you on this Dreadlock Holiday. (10cc can't do reggae.)

There was no winner, but that's OK. We are all winners. There wasn't a prize either. The winner was:
Ding ding ding ding! "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen."
I have a funny feeling most "Merry Gentlemen" are already resting comfortably this evening. Note: Kwanza and Dreadlock both show up on my spell checker. In the interest of "International Interop", I've added those words to my dictionary.
I just don't want to hang around long enough to see anyone "Donning their gay apparel".
That is a harsh visual.

Punctuation does wonders for run-on sentences too.

Dangling participles have no support so please fasten them with nouns before they fall and hurt somebody.

Heated political arguments, bantering around encryption,
and crucifying people who ask for radio mods
must have finally become boring.
Have we stooped so low that we're now taking
up sides over bad grammar???
