Hello..

I'm new to this and just began research to purchase a scanner mostly for listening to EMS, PD, FD in Newport County in addition to Westport MA, if that is possible. Just learning about scanners and assume that digital is the way to go. Any suggestions as to what scanners might be best suited for this kind of use would be appreciated.

Hello welcome to the hobby. Your best bet is to buy a digital scanner. You cannot get Newport police as they are encrypted however you can get Newport Fire on the RISCON P25 800 megahertz digital trunked system. Westport Mass is analog on 471.400 for police and 460.550 for fire. If you want to get Dartmouth Mass they are P25 Digital uhf on 453.550 NAC code 293. Digital P25 is becoming more and more popular so your best bet is to buy a digital scanner. Hope this helps you out
