Default Roseville PD and FD

It seems that every visit to the Roseville Radio Shack on Douglas I get this same clerk and when I ask about scanners she says to go digital. When I asked why she said that Roseville will be switching to digital communications in the next year or two. Does anyone here know if this is a true statement? I have been to a few other Radio Shacks around the area and when I posed this question to them they didn't know.

That I'm aware of, there are no immediate plans to go digital in Roseville. A lot of S. Placer seems to be going ahead with digital, but Roseville isn't a part of that. I asked one of the radio techs at RVPD and he "said" he didn't see it happening soon.

Back when I bought my 396t (4-5 years ago?) I heard the same thing, that Roseville was supposedly going digital "soon".

You are going to get more accurate information asking someone on this site than a typical worker at RS. Certainly if you want to monitor the new Placer County system you want digital. Roseville not so much at the moment.

I get asked about this often - My answer is this -

If you can afford it, do it.

It's nice to BE ABLE to monitor another digital freq or system. Whether it's a vacation, a new home, or just a change in interest - the option is there. There are several digital federal freqs in the Valley that can be interesting at times.

Also,

It would not surprise me one bit to find one or two digital Talk Groups pop up on the Roseville system. I've seen several systems slowly add digital Talk Groups. If you're in the Roseville area, I'm sure you'll be monitoring the SRRCS, which has digital talk groups now and more on the way.

This is why I have posed this question in this forum and I did buy a digital scanner. When Radio Shack was more of a radio, scanner and electronic parts place they seemed to know what they were talking about. Now days the employees they hire look to be right out of high school and lack the experience or knowledge. Good thing there is a forum like this......Thanks for the help fellas!

Yeah. Well, 40 years ago, a good friend of mine - ham license, electronics and physics major - tried to get a summer job at Radio Shack. He could describe the circuitry of what they were selling. Uh, sorry, no job - we want BUSINESS majors.

It's a time-honored tradition at RS to have people without electronics knowledge.

Radio Shack people don't even know what they are talking about. They are all just young punk kids that work there anymore. Its all about the bottom line for RS. Why pay big salaries when all they want are little monkeys to work there for min wages. RS doesn't care, they just want a warm body in there.

I went into my local radio shack about 6 months ago to buy a PRO 106 digital scanner because this model is the best in the market right now since Uniden can't seem to figure out why there digital models just dont receive right on the digital modulation. Firmware after firmware and they still can't seem to figure it out. When I bought my PRO 106 I knew more about that model than the dirty warm body that was working behind the counter. The weird thing is that you can't even buy these GRE scanners right now since the company stop making them because of manufacturing problems overseas I guess. Thats a big lie but o well.
