Default Computer won't find scanner! Help

Win XP to BCT15. Using supplied DB9 serial port cable. Baud rates are the same. Read the Users Manual five times. Uniden is no help. Can anybody tell me how to look in Device Manager to see whats right and/or wrong?

On my XP system here at work, it would likely be under 'Ports COM/LPT'

Dumb question - did you configure the ports on the BCT15? I would think you would need to do that first; at least you're not using a USB cable...and what software are you trying to use? 73 Mike

[edit] The instructions for setting the serial ports can be found in the 'settings menu' section of:

The only thing to set in the BCT15 is the front or rear connections ( for supplied cable make sure it is to the front) and bps rate. In your computer go to Administrative tools then computer management, device manager. Scroll down to com port to see what port is assigned (the communications port is usually com1). What software are you using? The big thing is assigning the correct port in your software...

I just did that at

http://www.radioreference.com/forums...ial-cable.html

It sure would be easier if you kept this all in one place instead of two threads in this forum and one in another.

I am having the same problem. Running XP, have the serial to USB cable with driver installed. Computer is seeing it. I tried to change the com port setting. No matter which one I try to use, I get "can not open com port, it is being used by another device" Device manager says I have only one com port being used.

I had to go into the bios setup and change the serial port numbers and then it worked. If you bios is set on automatic for the serial port it will not work with xp.

Smile got 'em talkin (WinXP and BCT15 scanner)

Thanks guys, I finally got it fixed. I found out from a computer junkie that the 9 pin serial port on the back of the CPU is usually COM Port 1. It is often unused because nobody uses 9 pin serial cables anymore because of the superior (and faster) USB cables' available these days. I had to uninstall the driver that was on COM Port 1. Set the baud rates to 57600. (i guess 115200 was too fast for the DB9 cable). I used the auto detect feature and they finally started conversing.
