Yeah, use the CD for a cup holder. For the most part, there are MANY better programs out there, and some are free. You didn't say which scanner you were trying to program, but the links below link all the known (most popular) software by scanner...

Popular Software for RS/Uniden Scanners - The RadioReference Wiki

Popular Software for GRE Scanners - The RadioReference Wiki

Note that several have the ability to download data from the databases, which requires the purchase of a premium subscription. That too is linked in these articles (anything in blue and/or underlined is a link...)

I have a Radioshack pro 164 and I also have the 20-047 cable. The reason I went with Scancat lite plus is because. The radioshack where I bought the snanner programmed my county in for me using this software. So I figured it would be the way to go.Silly me!

Also when I hook up the scanner I was able to bring up the list that is programmed into my scanner one time. But now I get a'' 054269 problem encountered check radio setting''

What is this free software available? Not a trial or something you just get a demo. But a free one that works and will program the scanner and not for 90 days offer.

Unfortunately the 164 doesn't have any 'free' software. Some of the older RS and several Uniden scanners do, however.

I would suggest starting a new thread in the RS forum to help diagnose your issue. Software questions should remain here; just start a new thread 73 Mike

Time to simply start programming the radio by hand.I give up problem is I can not figure out how to program the trunking stuff.Every one I ask locally seems to be in the same boat. They have trunking scanners and do not have a clue how to use that feature.I bought the software thinking that would make setting it up for trunking would be simple.I might as well have saved a bunch and just went with a non trunking scanner.

Extra for a trunking scanner and the software and the connecting cable!Oh well!

You might gain some insight on the programming by downloading Win97 from StarrSoft.com. It's an uncrippled software that you can use without cost for thirty days. You could then download the current contents of your radio and see what's in there. You could also check on the Radio Reference Illinois forum for a Win97 file for your area. A look at a trunking system in the software can be helpful even though you've made the decision to program by hand.

Unfortunately you have already fell into the money pit with the software you bought. As TES suggested use one of the others Starsoft or Psredit and you will like it much better. As far as the Premium subscription you can become a member and donwload and let it go for a while and come back to it down the road and update.

I messed with it and I just can not figure out how to add more then one county.Because you select a county and it puts everything up.Thats great however when you try to add a second or third. It does not just add to the list.It starts over.

I gave up and just programmed the scanner for the second county by hand.I even added text so I know what everything is at a glance.I guess I just do not get what the benifit is?I must of missed something.
