Default PSREdit300 and Win 97 not working

I am trying to use this software with my new pro 164 and Windows Vista. I can't get it to find a scanner connected to my serial port. I have updated drivers from microsoft and have tried the disk with the radio shack 20-047 cable. I tried Win 97 first and got header timeout error. I tried another computer that had XP on it with Win 97 and got the same error. I tried extra write time and no joy. I'm gonna give it up for tonight. Anyone got any ideas on what I can try? I'm bout outa ideas. I'm beginning to wonder if I got a dud cable from RS.

added: I also went into Device manager and made sure I had a com port and that was the number I used with each program. I even tried to change com port a buch of times.

Thanks and 73,

Chris

Hi Chris!

I have the same radio, the Radio Shack USB programming cable, and both software packages as you. I'm also running MS Vista Home Premium and everything works fine!

First make sure you're using the latest versions of WIN97/PSREdit-300. I had problems with earlier versions.

When you have PSREdit-300 running, click on the Configuration pull-down menu, then click on Serial Port, then under Communications Settings, click on Search For Scanner. Does it automatically find your scanner? I found sometimes while the software is running, and the scanner is on, if you unplug the cable from the scanner, and plug it back in, it helps detect it's presence. Or, try turning the scanner off, then back on while the software is running and the cable is attached.

It will not find my scanner when I try that. It does say it is opening port 4 (which is what it says it is set on in Device manager) but then it doesn't connect. I tried turning it off and back on and unplugging and replugging and no luck. I'm beginning to think it might be a bad cable. I may just take it back and switch it. At least that will help narrow it down.

I do this all the time on ham radios and never have any trouble. Its hurting my pride, lol.

Thanks and 73,

Chris

Make sure you're not using the short little mono-stereo pigtail adapter cord that came with the USB programing cable. It's a very common mistake.

Don't feel bad, it happens to a lot of us. One of the few times we actually read and follow the instructions and we get screwed!
