Default Computer fails to see the cable

I hate to rehash this subject but I need some advice; I have the RS clone cable & CD, but my Windows XP doesn't recognize the cable. I downloaded the drivers from RS & GRE, but that doesn't help. I read somewhere that the cable is supposed to state what com port to use but since the drivers do nothing I haven't a clue and there are about 30 com ports in my laptop. I have the trial edition of Win 97 up, I have the cable, the CD and a Pro 164 but I do need advice as to what to do next.

Many thanks.

when you plug in the cable it should have tried to install the driver and ask for the driver disc. Did it do that?
Then in the control panel you should see under COM port a usb cable that defaults to COM 3 if nothing else was on COM3.
Look also at COM PORTS in the controll pannel and remove the USB cable and see what port disappears. Plug it back in and it should apear to verify you have the write port.

O.K., I follow you, I did it and com port 4 showed up and when I pull the cable out, the com port 4 disappears. The cable doesn't light up, nor will the scanner download or any instructions appear. Should I have the CD in or not?

It sounds like it's working properly on COM4. The cable only lights up when there is send/receive (data transfer) activity. The scanner will not download until you have installed software for your scanner.

WIN97, PSREdit-300, or ARC300 are your choices. They all offer a free trial.

Cable is now operating, I changed the sequence of the upload (or is it a download?) by attachng the cable to the pc then to the running pro 164, I pressed the UP button but not the 1 button and on win 97 I clicked on "Download from Pro-164". Both the pc and the 164 showed progress displays! I couldn't understand the win 97 screen until I spread the columns wider and TA DA! there are my frequencies. Many thanks for the advice, it did help me!
