Exclamation Win97 no longer works w/Vista

I had been using Win97 successfully with my PRO-97 for quite some time until about 5 or 6 months ago, my computer decided that it would no longer let Win97 run. When I attempt to open it, a "Win97 Scanner Utility has stopped working" window is displayed, followed by "A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available." Needless to say, Windows has never figured out the problem.

I have downloaded the latest version of Win97, downloaded the MS .net framework (per Don's website), tried running as an administrator - nothing works. My best guess is that a Vista update or something of the sort is prohibiting Win97 from running.

I really don't want to resort to Scancat-Lite.

Don S (or anyone), do you have any suggestions? Please help!!!

My Win96 and Win97 work fine on Windows XP. When I moved everything over to a computer running Vista, Win 97 wouldn't open and kept asking me for my reg key, name, etc. When I enter it, nothing, zilch, nada happens. Numerous emails to Don Starr...also has gotten me zilch, zero, nada. Win96 works ok on Windows XP and Vista, however, except now I can't acess the Web Import feature on Win 96.....I get an error message that tells me to post something on the RR forums, so here it is. Sheesh!

Default Win97/96

Yep, I got the latest version of 96, but now it won't even open, so my previous problem of not being able to access the Web Import feature has to take a back seat. I'm thinking of dumping everything and just buying both Win programs all over again. I just sort of gave up on Win 97 anyway. Anybody interested in in two MANUAL PROGAMABLE scanners? I can't believe this.

Does anyone have any advice reference the original thread topic? Please start your own thread so this one can remain dedicated to my Win97 not opening problem.

Default Same issue with Win500

I have the same issue with Win500 on Windows Vista. There is some information written to the Event Log when Win500 crashes - nothing too useful:

I have .NET Framework 1.1 and 3.5 installed.

Attention Don Starr - HELP!

Or at least offer some suggestions. Please support your customers that have supported you by purchasing your program. And yes, we know it works on your wife's computer.

Please help!

All three of the apps (Win96, Win97, Win500) work on all of my machines here:
* Laptop running 32-bit Vista Ultimate
* Laptop running 64-bit Vista Ultimate
* Desktop running XP
* Desktop running Windows 2000

I've tried to duplicate the problem, but have not been able to. Without knowing what's crashing, the only suggestion I can offer is to ensure that your machine is completely updated with all Microsoft/Windows updates.

Thank you for your response, Don. I've updated my machine as much as I can, will keep trying to figure out the problem. My only hypothesis is that at a certain point Windows received an update that didn't agree with Win97, considering that it had worked successfully with Vista before.

Have you tried removing Windows Updates including drivers from the Windows updates? I'd suggest removing updates starting with the latest ones installed and work back. Do one at a time and reboot after each one. Write down the update number each time until you hit the one (hopefully) that was the offender. After you find the update, re-install all other EXCEPT the offender.

If you have not installed SP2 for Vista, I would try that first. If it doesn't fix it, then remove it and follow the above.

Also try to think about anything else that was installed after it stopped working.

Have you tried compatibility mode?

I have the exact same problem since I've updated to 1.82 and tried 1.84,85 and 86 and wouldn't fix it.

I also have the EXACT same error codes as Scottwitkin !

I run Win Vista Home Premium 64 bits SP2 French Canadian version and problem occurs with Win500, the only Starsoft product I have.

All Windows update are in exept for IE8. Until July 25th everything was rolling fine with the *.exe file on my secondary hard drive at it always been...

USB driver is up to date, Firmware is up to date and so is the Win500 version.

I've tried different location on main disk, or secondary disk etc.

Are there any traces that could need to be erased ifrom the Registry ?

Could it has to be with my paid licence ?

Bolt21:

I have Vista Home Premium 32 bit and can run Win97 Versions 1.21 and 1.24 with no problems. (I did so just this morning and transferred a set of frequencies to my Pro-97 and to my Pro-164.)

The last windows update I did was on July 23, 2009. Also, I have Internet Explorer Version 8 installed.

What is the path to the Win97 files? Do not put it in the ...\Program Files\ folder. Put the Win97 folder at the root of the drive.

If you are referring to the Recovery Partition, that is not a good place to put any files other than the ones that came with your computer.

Bolt21, below are the properties of the Win97 shortcut on my desktop:

No, I really mean a second disk, there is a real physical second hard drive in my PC

I've tried the property thing and compatibility mode and ... zip ...nothing ...

Everything is hunky-dory at home; my problem is the work computer where I barely have enough rights to sign on as a user... did the Win 96/97/500 updates and they crashed.... received a missing .dll message (will have to copy it tonight at work and post it, if needed)... I can't install dotnetfx so I reverted to versions of Win 96/97/500 just prior to the need for Micro$oft Net.... Now, here's hoping the System Admin installs the needed stuff....

I cannot make Win97 not work on my Vista computer. I tried several things like copying the files over from a Windows XP computer on a flash drive formatted with FAT32 instead of NTFS, putting the Win97 folder in the C:\Program Files\ folder and then creating another Windows User account with “Standard User” status . After I logged into the new account and made a shortcut to Win97.exe on my new user's Windows desktop, Win97 started up with no problems.

One thing has occurred to me is that last tax season NET framework version 1.1 gave us a lot of trouble while we were using our TaxWise program. I took that version of all the region’s TaxAide computers and off all mine too.

On my Vista, the only version of Microsoft .NET Framework I have installed is 3.5 SP1.

If any of the troubled computers has NET framework 1.1 installed you may want to try removing it and make sure version 3.5 SP1 is installed.
