Default Windows 7 software: pipedream?

I've been running Win98SE for over 10 years, and am actually considering a new PC with Windows 7. A whole s**tload of my software won't be usable, including UASD for my BCD396T. Just wondering if there is any software out there, yet, to replace it? Couldn't find anything on the Wiki about it.

OK, my bad. Found something in the Uniden forum, saying that the old 32 bit UASD software will work on Windows 7. That will surprise me, if it is so.

UASD and BC_UP have already been tested to work on Win7.

FreeScan works perfectly with Windows 7. It's by far the best free Uniden programming software available.

I've not found any scanner programming/control software affected by the change to Windows 7.

No properly written 32 or 64 bit Windows applications will fail from Windows 7. 16 bit applications (DOS and Windows 3.x/earlier) will not work on 64 bit Windows 7, but they didn't work on 64 bit XP or Vista either. Anything that worked on Vista will work on Windows 7.

Basically if the software you're using has been updated in the time since XP has existed, it should work. If it runs on Vista, it will almost certainly work. In either case, if it doesn't work, it's because the software developer was lazy and did things they shouldn't have been doing. Microsoft has just stopped including backwards compatibility hacks to support applications that do the wrong thing and is finally doing it right and using the big stick to smack programmers who do it wrong.

Default Windows 7

I have Windows 7 Home Premium x64 (retail) on my HP Pavilion dv7 notebook and am running ARC396PRO with no problems.

If you have problems, you can always try compatibility mode.

Also with Win7 Home Premium, and Ultimate, you can run Windows XP in a virtual machine, if you require true XP compatibility.

NEW HP DV7 running Windows 7 Home Premium (64 bit) want Uniden BC396XT, Need compatible software. Yes, I'm too lazy to type in full senteces. I will be using the software to program and moniter with the laptop. I plan to record to feed when things get interesting. I do not plan on broadcasting at this time.

Go get FreeScan . It will get you off the ground, it's freeware and works with the XT series. The only thing it doesn't do - yet - is record, but it's free, so it costs you nothing. We host the user guide for the software in our wiki . The link for it is here

You will need a USB-serial converter as well, since new PCs don't have serial ports.

Default Windows 7

Windows 7 comes in 32 bit and 64 bit editions. Even if you get the 64 bit edition it runs 32 bit programs. It won't run 16 bit programs.

If you want to run 16 bit programs you could always download Microsoft Virtual Machine for free and install Windows 98 in the Virtual Machine and run everything.

For that matter you can run most Windows programs on a Mac with an Emulator. If there is a will there is a way in the PC world.

My BC 796 software runs just fine on a 64Bit Windows 7 machine.

You could also create a partition on the hard drive and install two OS's, there are many possibilities.

ProScan does a nice job of control and database management and handles recording very well. There's a 30 day fully functional trial version.
