I'm having a problem getting Win96 to run on my Vista PC.
When I click on Win96.exe, I get a message that "Win96 Scanner Utility has stopped working". I deleted the program and re-installed it (same problem), and downloaded the most current version (as of 5 minutes ago), and installed it and get the same problem.
When I click on "View Problem Details" in the box that comes up with the error message, it contains this information (which is gibberish to me):
Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: APPCRASH
Application Name: Win96.exe
Application Version: 0.1.6.7
Application Timestamp: 4b291b13
Fault Module Name: Win96.exe
Fault Module Version: 0.1.6.7
Fault Module Timestamp: 4b291b13
Exception Code: c0000005
Exception Offset: 000a3b0f
OS Version: 6.0.6002.2.2.0.768.3
Locale ID: 1033
Additional Information 1: 9656

Additional Information 3: 136c
Additional Information 4: 6c85a2b74b0a8c32b6b4bb9adcedcba5

It has worked on this PC in the past, but since there haven't been many changes in ur system here, I haven't had the need to run WIn96 in a while.
Any help greatly appreciated!

Sure did, with the same results.
I have to wonder if this may have something to do with a recent MS update. I have run both Win96 and Win500 on this PC in the past without them crashing.

I've e-mailed Don, but no replies yet.

What is the complete path to where the Win500 program files are installed?
What is the complete path to where the Win500 data files are saved?
Vista and windows 7 have restrictions on where data files can be saved.

Please read this thread and the answer is at post number 22 ... and you might find your solution ...

http://forums.radioreference.com/sc...are/153936-win97-no-longer-works-w-vista.html

Solved a very similar problem with Win500 on Vista Home Premium 64 bits for me and it had to do with Windows Data Execution Prevention

Don : You should really take a look at this as it is happening more often and every time it happens it is after a Microsoft update. Altough it not always happening after every MS update... This happened to a few folks in the last weeks

One of the problems that vista and win7 share (from a user point of view) is that the programs are not supposed to write temporary files back to the "program files" folder. This makes sense to keep viruses from hijacking legitimate programs. That is not how many of our programs are written though. I have found by installing the programs to my personal user or Default user in the users file, this will take care of many of those problems.
YMMV.

Thanks for the info and suggestions, everyone.
To answer some of the questions here: Neither Win500 or Win96 is installed in the "program files" folder. They are installed in sub folders of their own, off of another folder I created.
I entered both of them into the "exception" list for DEP, and re-booted the system, and that did NOT fix the problem. I still get the infamous "Win96 (or Win500) scanner utility has stopped working" message. I am also running both of them in WinXP compatibility mode.
This is the "problem details" for Win96:
Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: APPCRASH
Application Name: Win96.exe
Application Version: 0.1.6.7
Application Timestamp: 4b291b13
Fault Module Name: Win96.exe
Fault Module Version: 0.1.6.7
Fault Module Timestamp: 4b291b13
Exception Code: c0000005

Additional Information 3: 136c
Additional Information 4: 6c85a2b74b0a8c32b6b4bb9adcedcba5

And this is the "problem details" for Win500:
roblem signature:
Problem Event Name: APPCRASH
Application Name: Win500.exe
Application Version: 0.1.8.1
Application Timestamp: 49fb2182
Fault Module Name: Win500.exe
Fault Module Version: 0.1.8.1
Fault Module Timestamp: 49fb2182
Exception Code: c0000005
Exception Offset: 000fdb0f

Additional Information 3: 1485
Additional Information 4: e666551545b983d5e7c43a0e78b9c4e9

None of this makes much sense to me at all.
I really appreciate the help offered here. I had hopes that the software developer would step up to the plate, but so far, nothing.
If anyone has any other suggestions, please feel free to post them!

Have you tried turning DEP off (EDIT: see setting below) (not just adding an exception for Win500 / Win96)?

Also, you shouldn't have to run them in any "compatibility mode".

Here, I routinely run both programs on Vista (both 32- and 64-bit), no "compatibility mode", in the "Program Files (x86)" directory, with DEP set to "Turn on DEP for essential Windows programs and services only"

Don, I'll check the DEP settings and reset the "compatibility mode" settings today and post my results.

Bill, I have set the DEP as you suggested and re-booted the computer. I turned off the Compatibility Mode, and still both programs crash immediately.

I'm at a bit of a loss to as to what is wrong...

Sorry to bump this back up, but I'm pulling my hair out trying to get both of these to work.
I have e-mailed Don and have not had any replies. The suggestions posted here, while greatly appreciated, have not resolved the problems.
I have completely deleted the programs from my computer (as per the instructions on Don's website) and downloaded the latest versions and re-installed them, but the problem persists.
I had expected better support from Don, but I guess that's not going to happen.
If anyone can solve this problem, I'd be very grateful for the solution!

In Win96 folder:
1. Do you have a RRLib.dll dated 12/16/2009 or later?
2. Do you have a WinXXCommon.dll dated 1/16/2010?

Hi, Frank.
Both are dated 2/7/2010 (I reinstalled everything today).

The dates from the Win96.ZIP file should be:
* Win96.EXE, RRLib.DLL, Win96Help.chm: 16 Dec 2009
* WinXXCommon.DLL: 03 Sep 2009
* msvcr71.DLL: 12 Jan 2004
The above 5 files must be extracted from the ZIP file into a directory on your hard drive (i.e. make sure you're not trying to run Win96.EXE from "within the ZIP").

Do you have Microsoft's .NET 1.1 installed?

Have you tried running Win96.EXE with "administrator" privileges?

I'm at a loss as to why, if the files are all extracted from the Win96.ZIP file into a single directory, .NET 1.1 is installed, and DEP is not turned on, Win96 would crash upon launch. I just downloaded Win96 onto a Vista (32-bit, "Ultimate") machine that has never run Win96, extracted the files to a new directory, and launched it. It ran with no problems.

Hi Don,
The files you asked about do have the dates you indicated they should have.
The files were unzipped and installed into c:\Win96

DEP is "On" for essential windows programs and services only.

MS NET Framework 1.1 service pack 1 was installed on this computer on 1/15/2010, and a security update for it was installed on 1/17/2010

When I right click on win96.exe, select Properties, and then Compatibility, "Run this program as an administrator" is grayed out. However, I am the only user on this computer and there are no other users, so I should be an administrator...I think...

It may have been lost in the previous messages, but WIN96 and WIN500 did work on this laptop at one time. Somewhere, somehow, something changed. It may have been a MS update that killed these programs or maybe something else happened.
