In other words, I can turn the backlight on remotely but was unable to turn it off remotely.

This is not a major issue and my searching of this forum didn't turn up where it had been discussed before.

Is this a bug or am I missing something? Is there a trick to get the light to extinguish?

Works for Me, I just checked it.
It dims, then it's off, and then back on.
