Default FreeSCAN Export feature?

Could someone explain to me how the Export CSV feature works and why it's even there?
And why, when I do export a system from FreeSCAN using that feature, that FreeSCAN doesn't recognize it as a compatible file if I try to use the Import feature via-File / Import....From FreeSCAN ?

Why is the Export feature in FreeSCAN saving files in a format FreeSCAN doesn't recognize when I go to open that file I just saved?

Or maybe a better question should be: What is the purpose of the Export feature in FreeSCAN and when would someone use it, and why?

Thanks

It exports a "CSV" (comma separated values) file so that you could open it into another program that can "import", or read, a CSV file... for instance, ARC996 can't open a Freescan formatted file, but it can import the CSV file.

Not exactly a clean transfer is some cases, but it can save a LOT of typing. Importing a CSV file may involve some clean-up, tweaking, or reformatting depending on the applications involved.

FreeScan can make pretty good use of an exsisting CSV file using it's EZ-Grab feature.

Make a tiny "cheat sheet" for all of your System Quick Keys!

It's not meant to export then re-open with Freescan. Freescan saves the file with its own file extension, like "BCD996XT 24-01-2013 17-10.996".

fxdscon, I hadn't thought of using the exported file with the EZ-Grab feature but I will play around with that.
Thanks for that tip.

And Doc, I actually did play around with the Excel file tonight, cleaned it up a bit and saved it. It looks like a worksheet now with a Conventional System layout look.
I'm going to work on my trunked CSV exported files tomorrow.

Thanks to the both of you for the explanations. S-l-o-w-l-y I'm learning the little quirks about my scanner and the FreeSCAN program.

Much obliged.

Steve Freescan has a pretty well defined user guide stored in our wiki - you can get to it in FS via Help/Online Help or here...

FreeScan User Guide - The RadioReference Wiki

(OK I'm biased, I helped write it - so shoot me, hi)

and of course, you know about the BCT15X Easier to Read guide written by one of our members...
along with a great many other links that will help you along -

I read through that users guide a couple of times Mike, but found it didn't explain itself good enough for me, I'm a little thick sometimes. That's why I was exporting and trying to import, I had to see how it worked-and why.
But I did find this on the Web which is an older tutorial about FreeSCAN. I found that to be very helpful.

Yes, I do have that Easier to Read guide, and refer to it often. And I find myself re-reading many articles on the RR Wiki quite often. At least for me, I research, read, try it out, go back and read some more, and do more research. There's alot to know about this scanner I own and I feel I've barely scratched the surface on it's usage and capabilities.

But I'm enjoying it tremendously. What a great hobby!
Thanks again
