Win500 wont load. Crashes when opening.
When I go to open Win500 it crashes with a popup box that says:
Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: APPCRASH
Application Name: Win500.exe
Application Version: 0.2.0.6
Application Timestamp: 4eef4b55
Fault Module Name: Win500.exe
Fault Module Version: 0.2.0.6
Fault Module Timestamp: 4eef4b55
Exception Code: c0000005
Exception Offset: 0014db0f
OS Version: 6.0.6002.2.2.0.768.3
Locale ID: 1033
Additional Information 1: ab70
Additional Information 2: 1eed82d128d077f3f8c3b3e07d865eca
Additional Information 3: 2362
Additional Information 4: b67385b351bb06d74ecd2cc304932153
The little box that says loading before Win500 loads will not even come up. Nothing. Immediately crashes with the above information. It is a Vista 32bit system on a laptop and its not DEP related because it is off. Same thing happens if I remove Win500 and put it back.
I sent an email to Don Star through his website last week and I have heard nothing back.
Is anyone else having an issue? I am pretty sure a Windows Update caused this problem. I dont use the laptop much so I know about what has changed on it. It worked fine the last time I programmed the scanner. I am in the process of reinstalling the OS from scratch so Ill see how that goes. Im about ready to pull my hair out here.

I had this problem a while back when I upgraded to Windows 8, it turned out to be my antivirus causing the crash. Avast was the problem.

Well I have it tracked down to the problem. It is a Windows Update KB2758857 Security Update. I install it and it crashes, uninstall it and it works. Tried it several times.
Ill bet im not going to be the only one with the problem. Looks like it affects XP, Vista, and Win7.
Microsoft Security Bulletin MS12-081 - Critical : Vulnerability in Windows File Handling Component Could Allow Remote Code Execution (2758857)
If you have automatic updates on, you have probably already installed it.
Appears it has something to do with a security hole with crafty names, whatever that means. The only thing I can think of is it is seeing Win500.exe, Win500_Com.exe, Win500Client, or WinXXCommon.dll and thinking it is a trojan or something. Maybe it is a trojan.
Maybe some of you fellows can check and see if you have installed that update and check and see if your Win500 is crashing or not.
I hope Don Starr will at least say something on the matter of this. I would like to be able to install updates for windows without worrying about my scanner software.

It appears the same update crashes Microsoft Money. They fixed Money by downloading an updated .dll file. I would guess that WinXXCommon.dll in Win500's folder is the problem.

Just FYI
I have that update installed (15-Dec-12) and both Win92 and Win500 work fine on my Win7 Pro 32-bit Toshiba laptop. Win92 does trigger an Avast trojan warning, but works fine after that.

Win500 support
Still haven't had a reply back from anyone at Starsoft. Im glad Im smart enough to fix my own problem. I thought they were supposed to be speedy at giving a reply back. They must not care. So much for Win500 support. I guess I will be selling ARC software from now on.

It's likely something specific with your configuration, as I have that update installed as well with no problems at all, just as others have posted, so there isn't anything Don could do to fix your issue anyway.

Maybe the Microsoft security team have ignorantly decided that anything with WIN in the filename that is not part of a Microsoft product is a threat.

Well I understand its not Win500's fault and the fact is, havent heard a word from starsoft saying anything or giving me any kind of help. Maybe starsoft could provide an update on the issue or at least give me a reply back instead of leaving me hung out to dry. I spent several days trying to figure out the problem and we know what the problem is, so I have already done half of the work for them.
I have Win500 working again but I cannot install the security update or it crashes. Now I worry about any future updates getting installed and the no support team at Starsoft.

The problem is, that update by itself isn't the problem as many of us have it installed with no issues, there's some other issue on your PC, in conjunction with that update, that's causing the problem.

There are no issues with my computer. It has been restored and updated completely. It is the KB2758857 Security Update that is causing the problem. I would say that it could be the configuration of the computer and the update. No two computers in the world are configured the same so I dont put the blame on my computer. There are other actual problems with that update and Microsofts own programs. I am not blaming Win500 for the problem. I am blaming them for not giving a rats behind, when I needed help.

I understand what you're saying, but it's not Don's responsibility IMHO. If it was a widespread issue, with more than one person, he might need to look at the problem, but just you, I don't see it as something he should be dealing with, just my $.02

You must be somebody that works there under an alias and are trying to take up for the laziness of the company. All Im asking for is a simply reply back whether or not they can help me or not.
How can you take up for somebody that will simply not give a reply?
Have you had any dealings with anyone from Starsoft?
How can it not be his responsiblitly when I paid for lifetime updates and support?
Sure didnt take him long to accept my money.

Not at all, what I am is someone that's been in the IT/networking field for 15+ years, constantly dealing with OS and software issues, and I don't expect a software vendor to fix a problem that is obviously a computer specific issue and not an issue with the their program.
Nowhere did I ever discuss his lack of contact nor did I speak up for him or defend him for not contacting you, I spoke specifically about your expectation of him to solve your unique issue.

Sir, I didnt expect him to magically solve my issue here. I do however expect him to acknowledge my problem and maybe try to help me (and others) and at least reply back. That is called support. At the time I did not know the problem was the Update patch either.
Also I wanted them to know there was a problem and at the time I didnt know it was just me, and to try to help the man if I could. I also sent the error code. I may as well sent an email to the big oak tree in the back yard.

I understand your frustration. I'm going to do a bit of testing to see if I can help you. As you seem to be the only one in this thread running Vista I'm going to load up a PC at work today with Vista 32 bit with all the updates and load Win500 on it and see if I get your results, maybe it is a Vista specific issue.
Do you have an Intel or AMD CPU? How much RAM? What anti-virus are you running?

Well I sure do appreciate your willingness to help me. I guess the only thing you can do is see if it crashes on your vista machine just like you say. Windows doesnt crash, Win500 crashes with the error in post 1 when KB2758857 Security Update (Windows6.0-KB2758857-x86.msu) is installed. I usually dont download the updates through the windows update program. I usually get the info from the program and go to the Microsoft Download Center and download it so I will have the updates if I need to restore.
Asus M51Sn Laptop
Vista Home Premium SP2 32 bit
Intel Core 2 Duo T5550 @ 1.83GHz
3.00 GB Memory
Was using AVG but since restore havent installed it back, with no difference.
It has Asus Security Protect Manager with the fingerprint sensor.
Comodo Firewall.
Thats all I can think to tell you.
Oh DEP is off.

Ok, so I did a fresh install of Vista Home SP2, did all the updates except the one you were having trouble with so as to save it for last, once that update was installed Win500 still ran. So I would suspect it might be a driver or a factory app from Asus maybe. But this at least confirms it's not an inherent problem with Vista.

Well I guess it is just my computer. It baffles me. Works on my XP system with the security update. Is there a way to track it down with a program to see exactly what causes it.
