I am a new user and I am looking for some help in downloading the police, fire, and rescue frequencies in my local area...Virginia Beach, Va / Hampton Roads area. If you could give some advice on where to go I would appreciate it. I have just bought a new Uniden SC 230 which is able to down load directly to the unit.

Thank you in advance

Sambo

Click on Database at the top and then click on your state, then county, and so on.

Sambo; if memory serves, the SC230 does not support Trunking, which is heavily used by the public safety systems in your area. In fact, according to the database, the Virginia Beach area is expected to migrate to a digital platform, which is under construction.

If that seems like Greek to you, then it's time to return the scanner and read up on what 'Trunking' is all about. This link will definitely help (read the 'basics' first, then 'Motorola' and 'Project 25', in that order...)

http://wiki.radioreference.com/index.php/Trunking

Now, as to what radios will support the new system when it's online (and will support the system that you have now...) - we have Wiki pages on all of these radios.
  • Radio Shack PRO-96
  • Radio Shack PRO-2096
  • Uniden BC-296D
  • Uniden BCD-396T
  • Uniden BCD-996 (to be released soon)
  • Uniden BC-796D
To find information on all of these radios, simply click on the Wiki link which you can find in the blue toolbar on the top of the page. Slide down about 1/2 way down the page, and click on the Radio Shack or Uniden links on the right side.

I would also go to the Virginia forum and see what other folks in your area are using.

There's a lot of information to digest. Sit down, read and start asking questions. Take your time. 73s Mike
