ARC996 Hangs

Intermittantly and with no warning, ARC996 will stop running. This only seems to happen with the virtual control running. I have to restart the laptop and ARC software to get it running again. Win XP Event Viewer reports App Hang on ARC996 whenever this happens. In addition when ARC996.exe hangs the memory it ties up goes up abot 10x what it normally runs at.

Are you doing recording? If so make sure the laptop does not go in powersave mode.

don't get me wrong, I love the software (I have ARC396 and I think the ARC996 is maybe close to it). there are a few issues with it. try making a shortcut to your desktop (if not already there), right click on it and select the Compatibility Mode tab. check the first box and select Windows 98/Windows ME setting and click Apply then OK. this helped me out a lot and has made it a little more stable.

Other items I forgot in my first post:

This is a straight serial cable connection - no USB.

This unit is mounted in my truck.

I had the exact same set-up with my BC780 / ARC780 on the same laptop and never had a problem.

Only when I go into the Win XP Event Viewer "App Hang on ARC996.exe". There are no on-screen errors, if that is what you are asking.

After further research, I have also discovered that when the Virtual Control is running, it will prevent other apps from running correctly - one such app is Sony's Sonic Stage (media player). It's GUI will start, but it will not function at all.

If I start the Sony app first it is fine. If I start ARC996 first and the Virtual Control - no joy on Sony as stated above.

Try installing new copies of both programs (after uninstalling them). Maybe a system file that they share is corrupt and a re-installation should take care of that.
