help with gre cable driver
well, my laptop with XP died the other day so i downloaded Win96 to my old 98 desk top. i put the driver cd in and nothing. tried a couple of things using 98 and although it shows the gre cable it says it can't find a driver. would you knowledgeable people have any idea what to do or what i'm doing wrong? i want to download from the scanner to 96 which i just bought again because i wasn't smart enough to keep the key to the old one. (will also have to buy 97 again too, if i can get 96 to work.) thanks in advance.
btw, i love my 2096,96,2055, and 97.

Are you using a usb to serial port converter to hook to the cable?

Sounds as if the USB drivers are not installed, You can check this by checking divice manager look for universal serial bus host and see if usb controlers are installed, you may check the propertys of each listed. If they are not there check the windows inf folder for the drivers and install the one you need. the file will be something like usb.inf or usbport.inf
you may need both.
Hope this helps.

I forgot to include that if the files are there then the only thing left is to check greamerica.com for the driver for the cable.

Is the GRE USB cable a USB 1.1 device or USB 2.0? Your old machine may not be compatible.

The GRE cable I have uses the FTDI chip. Drivers are here.

Wayne, FTDI drivers are on the GRE disk also.
Lou, this PC is running XP and has USB 1.1. The GRE disk was required during initial hookup. My XP laptop is USB 2.0 and the disk was not required. However, the laptop is XP as original OS and this desktop is XP upgraded from 98 via (hiccup) ME.

Well I finally got back online...
Looking at the GRE Page on scanner accessories, it appears as the cable is a 1.1 device since it is compatible with both USB 2 or USB 1.1.
Back to your original question, upon re-reading it, you say, "i put the driver cd in and nothing." Does that mean you have not loaded the driver from the CD or that you have and it still isn't working?

Uhhh, you could put a blank CD in the drive and it would do the same thing. How about trying to load the driver...after you have the CD in the drive, plug the cable in and then follow the prompts to load the driver.

Remember, you must use Windows 98SE or Windows ME for USB support. First editions of 98 do not support USB.
