Angry Pro 96 Scanner Programming Trouble

I currently have a uniden bc296d and just bought a pro 96 scanner for hopefully better decoding and reception. In addition to buying the pro 96 scanner I bought the cable as well and tried using it with scancat lite software. But it did not recognize the scanner. Can anyone tell me how to program the pro 96 scanner with the computer cable and software? Any help is greatly appreciated! I never had this much trouble programming my uniden.

ScanCat Lite has some issues. As hoser147 recommended, WIN96 from Don Starr is your best bet.

I am no fan of ScanCatLite (as any long-time member can attest to); however, it should recognize the scanner even though it won't program it properly. It sounds as if there is a cable issue.

Which cable did you get? The actual SKU from RS would probably be the best way of getting that info. If you bought the USB cable, have you installed the drivers? If you did, are you using Vista and if so did you download the correct drivers (they are not on the CD)?

I was able to get my pro 96 working. After installing the RS Driver software it assigned the cable a COM21 spot. I had to redo that to a COM within the range of 0-9. I picked COM 2. Then when I went to SCAN CAT radio settings the auto configure did not recognize my scanner. So I had to manually entered the radio model, baud rate and COM port. It programmed just about everything in my PRO 96. The software will only let me program the entire radio as opposed to choosing one certain bank at a time. It would sure be nice if Radio Shack made dedicated software for its scanners, like Uniden does. You guys are right! Scan Cat Lite stinks! Thanks for all your replys.

Just a couple of points:
  • When programming the Pro-96 (indeed any GRE built RS scanner) you always write the entire memory no matter who's programming software you use.
  • Check all the details of the transferred programming from SCL, you may find your radio is not quite programmed the way you thought.

I'm a newbie to the 96 and 2096. Let me tell you that these guys are not kidding about using Win96!!! I tried all the others and Win96 is so much more dependable, versitile and best of all compatible with RR's database and radio programming. Trust me get the win96 program and start enjoying your scanner.
