Anyone have this problem before or maybe know how to cure the chaos?
As a side note, to load the ARC996 software where it recognizes the scanner, I must quickly load the program and click the RS232 setup button or the COM 1 port will not be available...
Thanks for any guidance that can enlighten me!

As much as I would like to say it's the Butel software, I can't. Sounds like something else on the PC.
Not trying to bombard you with questions, but just some basic troubleshooting...
Have you tried the scanner with the same cable with a different PC? Are you using a serial to USB adapter? What OS is installed on the PC? Have you tried uninstalling any new software or hardware? Have you checked the memory on the PC with something like Memtest (
http://www.memtest.org/)? Have you tried installing new drivers for the motherboard (if using a real serial port, which you probably are if its COM1) or new drivers for the USB to serial adapter (if using a device like this)? Have you tried a new cable? Have you tried the USB cable using the front port on the scanner? How old is the PC? Have you tried uninstalling any unused application? Have you tried just a good 'ol clean up with Windows Disk Cleanup and a defrag? Do you have adaquite hard drive space for recording? Have you tried a fresh install of the OS? Have you tried opening the Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) to see what else is running? (see screen shot attached).
