Default Win96 and Vista

Hello all.

I have been a long time registered user of Don Starrs Win96 on my Pro96 scanner. Not to long ago I purchased a new laptop computer with Vista Ultimate installed.
I installed Win96 on this machine and of course, it does not work. I looked up the comments on running win96 under Vista on the Starsoft web site and it seems that Don Starr says that many people have had success running win96 under vista. I am not sure how, as the program won't even start up for me at all. Now I know Don has not tested the software himself under Vista so technically its not supported or compatible at this stage, and I hope in the near future it is fixed up to run under Vista.
But I am interested in those that have got it running under Vista, and how they did so. So far I have tried different compatibility modes and other Vista settings to get the software to work. Unfortunately nothig so far even lets the software start up. I end up with an error (which offers absolutely no explination as to why it does not work ) and the software has to be shut down.
I tried to contact Don via email on the site but I received no reply, so I assume he does not know how others got it to run under Vista.

Is there some trick I am missing here????? How have others managed to get this to run under Vista?

Any help would be appreciated.

Dave

I believe you have to run it under Admin rights

Yes did that, and it still crashes before it even starts up. No idea why, but it does.

Any other idea??

I've run WIN96 under Vista Home Premium (should be not different). I just extracted all of the WIN96 zipped files into one folder, and ran the executable.

What is the error your seeing?

I just tried Win96, Win97, and Win500 on my wife's "new-ish" Sony laptop (Vista Ultimate on a Core2 Duo T5250 w/ 2GB RAM). The machine had never run any of the apps before...

While logged in with her username (which has Administrator rights), I downloaded them from the web site, extracted into a new directory, and all three ran just fine. I didn't attempt any scanner-related operations (upload/download), since I didn't want to install any cable drivers on that laptop. However, I did connect (from Win500) to my Win500 server without any trouble.

Tried downloading again and I get the same thing. I have admin rights but it still does it. ALl that happens is this. The small 'loading' window comes p, then Vista just displays a error window that simply says 'Win96 Scanner Untility has stopp working' 'windows is checking for a solution for the problem'. Then the window changes the text in it and it then says. 'A problem caused the program to stop woprking correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available'. There is a close program button, which when you click closed the small 'loading' window.

And thats it. There is no idication as to why it crashes, and windows never comes up with an answer at all as to why. So I have no way of telling what is causing this issue.

I have tried running it in different compatibility modes as well, such as XP SP2 but I get the same hting no matter what. Has me stumped totally.

Is there any way i can debug it to see wht is causing it. Maybe if I can find this out I can fix it, or Don and modify something to get it to work.

Are you current with your Windows Updates? What anti-virus/firewall software are you running?

Yes I have Vista up to date. Running Avir Anti Virus software, though this does not seem to be affecting it at all.

OK I got this out of Windows Problem reporting. Maybe Don can make out what it all means:-----

Also got this different problem reported:-

Now none of this means anything to me, but for those programmers out there, they may be able to get a solution out of it.

Windows problem reporting doesn;t come up with any solutions for this at all. This is all I could get out of the problem reporting logs.

Thought Don may be interested in this, as I managed to get Win96 working in Vista after the issues I had. The problem turned out to be the USB- serial adaptor driver not starting up, despite the fact it was installed correctly. A force install of an incompatible driver then a revert back to the original driver fixed the problem, and win96 started up.
I would say the fault in the first place was that Win96 did not pick up any sort of serial port at all, unfortunatly Win96 doesn't give you a warning that there is no port present, and instead in Vista comes up with a blank warning that tells you not much at all.
Something to consider in future updates maybe.

Thanks again for Win96. still the best programming software for the Pro96.

Glad you got it working. Don't it just feel good when you fix things on your own ?

I was abit surprised no body responded to your post of the "Windows Problem reporting" info. It would have been nice to know something about what was noted because I also don't have a clue what that stuff say's or means.

I sure am glad I got it going. Bit annoyed I didn;t pick the problem up earlier. But I checked the driver and it said it was fine, just when I fired up Win96 for some reason it then stopped. Writing over the driver did nothing, so forcing a totally different driver in then reverting back to the original one worked. Don't ask me why, but it did.
This was after I was starting to install VMware to see if it would run in a virtual XP.

I donlt know what all that software error message was either. I take it theres not enough people who know this kind of stuff here, or just none kind enough to be interested to help.

I can suddenly no longer run Win96 or 97 on my Vista laptop. They worked fine for months and months without issue. Just to test, I also downloaded the Win500 and have the same problem. The little 'loading' window pops up and then disappears....no program runs.

I have tried running it under XP compatibility mode with no success. I have trued replacing the program files and .dll's witn new versions from the website...no luck.

Nothing in the event logs that coincides with the attempts to run the program.

Anyone have a similar issue?

I have problems sometimes with Drivers disappearing in Vista. One day it works fine and the next day its gone. If I plug the cable into a different USB port on the side of the laptop the Driver works. The next time I use the same USB port the Driver is gone again. Another thing is I use only 4 devices but 9 com ports are "in use".

Anyone see the problem I stated above? I cannot get any of the Win programs to run (but PSREdit runs fine).

Smile Vista & Win96

Hi all

I picked up A HP Pavillion dv9727cl Laptop (at walmart) with Vista Operating system. Don Starr's program works perfectly. My problem was drivers, once I fixed that it ran like a dream. I started with a clean install and up loaded the files off the radio to the program.

I also run Pro96Com ver. 1.6.7. Build83, BcTools and Free scan, they run like a champ.

I can't get ID Tracker II to run. I get an error message "429" and do not know how to fix it.
If any one knows how to make it run Please let me know (and please keep it very simple, as I am not a computer wiz).

Still cannot get this to run. Unbelievable.

The loading window comes up, then nothing. I have tried run as admin, I have tried compatibility mode, I have tried changes to BCD settings, all failed.

I am now going to create a Win XP virtual PC and see if I can run it there...

It might be easier to find out what changed on your machine, if you were able to run the Winxx programs previously.

You may want to shut off your uac control in windows vista.
Look in the help section of Vista

Turn User Account Control on or off

User Account Control (UAC) can help you prevent unauthorized changes to your computer. It works by prompting you for permission when a task requires administrative rights, such as installing software or changing settings that affect other users.

We don't recommend turning User Account Control off. If you do turn it off, you should turn it back on as soon as possible.

Click to open User Accounts.

Click Turn User Account Control on or off. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

Select the Use User Account Control (UAC) to help protect your computer check box to turn on UAC, or clear the check box to turn off UAC, and then click OK.

I normally run with UAC off, as it is a bit annoying. I will try shutting off Norton as well...

The only thing I can think of is that it is Norton related. I can run any of the programs just fine on the XP machine, but suddenly no longer on the Vista machine. I have not had a single other problem with Vista in over a year...

I will have to rely on my desktop in the interim...I have a PSR-600 on the way and I will need to program it once it arrives. Time to buy a new license...LOL...that will make 3 (96/97/500).
