I've just about finished the off center fed Dipole antenna:

As there was a question as to whether the balum was even necessary I ran a few simple tests. I don't have the gear to do a bench test so I did a field test; it showed that the balum increased the FM reception by a good margin, so it stays.
I used 1/2" copper pipe (5/8" o.d.) in the construction of the antenna.
I can't say what the antenna does on some bands as they were't very active, not long enough to switch the leads around anyway.
This isn't my only RX antenna, I have 4 antennas inside a house that's 300 feet up on a hill, so when a hot call is on I will lock onto the frequency, then quickly change antennas (if needed) by
a switch to get the clearest reception.. This one is so narrow it'll go behind a bookcase.
I'm quite happy with the results!
