I am thinking about buying one of these as a backup antenna or just something to mess around with.

If you are thinking about using it for radio, the polarization is wrong. I am not sure how you could mount it and utilize the built in rotor.

Why? If it's anything like all the other similar products out there, it's a crappy antenna along with an even crappier preamp.
