reception an distance

saw i thread earlier about distance an it was mentioned that you can use a sat.dish. can this be used for a scanner? i have an outdoor antenna but iam wondering if this would do anything at all. could i run coax.from one of the antenna outputs on the back of my direct tv hd receiver an hook to my connector to the scanner an actually hear stuff/ just curious an this is my stupid antenna type question for the month.

That was a smart@55 answer to an open ended question. The reference was to receiving signals from space, specifically Direct TV or Dish Network signals for TV. Retrofitting a dish with a different antenna can be done but usually for things like wireless networking (WIFI). The dish part is just a reflector and designed for very high frequency signals.
